Joppatowne is a community within Joppa
Joppatowne started life as a planned community built by the Panitz corporation in the 1960's. Much of Joppatowne is built on land made from dredging tributaries of the Gunpowder river to provide channels for power boats going to and from the Gunpowder Cove Marina in the center of Joppatowne.
Joppatowne starts at U.S. 40 and ends about 3 miles south, where it borders Magnolia and Edgewood Arsenal (part of Aberdeen Proving Ground). The western border is the Little Gunpower river, which is the Baltimore/Harford county line. The Joppa post office is located in Joppatowne, but the Joppa area spans not only Joppatowne, but also areas to the north and east along U.S. 40 and MD route 7.
The Joppa/Joppatowne connection is not quite analagous to the Lutherville/Timonium one. Lutherville and Timonium at one time had separate post offices, which were combined into "Lutherville-Timonium" with one post office and ZIP code sometime in the late 80s/early 90s. Joppatowne is to Joppa as Mays Chapel is to Timonium.
Joppatowne is often misspelled as Joppatown. This is partly due to a historical marker that used to be on U.S. 40, but has since been moved to Joppa Farm Road, the main drag through the community. "Joppa Town" was an early settlement on the same land and the original county seat of Baltimore County (there was no Harford County at the time). The Rumsey Mansion, which still stands in Joppatowne and is (or at least used to be) the home of the Harford County Executive, dates back to that time. Joppa was a natural deep water port, and Joppa Road, which many people associate with Towson, actually takes one all the way from central Baltimore County (Ruxton area) through White Marsh all the way to Joppa, if you follow it diligently enough.
There used to be some pretty large orchards in what is now Joppatowne, but none are left.
