I would suggest Howard County especially if you have kids. High schools in PG County are overrun with gangsta type thugs and illegals. You should be able to drive from parts of Howard County to Beltsville in 30 minutes. PG County has the second worst school system in Maryland after Baltimore City.

Moderator cut: no name calling. The school system is not run by no thugs. Illegals are a nationwide concern and just because someone is illegal doesnot mean they are out here committing crimes.

Beyond that, unless Terrapin2212 is checking everyone's immigration status, he has no idea whether someone's an illegal or not. He's just using the term "illegals" as a proxy for a racial/ethnic descriptor that he doesn't feel comfortable using because he knows that's discriminatory.

So true. My son's ex girlfriend went to high school in Beltsville and even though there were quite a few "hispanic" (not especially illegal) students and other students that dressed "gangsta" she never felt threatened or intimidated to go to school. She is white and was amongst the minority in this school but it was never an issue. Just because someone is "different" than you, doesn't mean they are a threat.

Beltsville is a cosmopolitan area. There are very nice and not-so-nice areas. If you are only comfortable in a rural-type atmosphere, I think you might find Beltsville too crowded. Otherwise there are plenty of decent neighborhoods in and around Beltsville, Calverton, etc. Nice rental units anywhere in DC are pricey to me. They are building some shiney new apts on Rte 1 next to the Holiday Inn. I agree with the suggestions and descriptions of kjg1963. Beltsville is most well known for USDA's huge research facility.

sagegriot, have you noticed the apartments by Ikea, on Contee at Route 1, on Cherry Lane by the mall, and north Laurel by Bottom of the Bay all have the same look? I'm not sure if I especially like them. I'm sure they are really nice but there is something about the massive look of them that seems to distract me. I'm glad there is interest in these areas and things are progressing, but these mega complexes seem to be sprouting up in the weirdest places.

I noticed that! I was stuck in horrible traffic the other day on Rte 1, so I had a chance to look around. It seems too "big city" to me- just too giant and impersonal.

We should set fire to PGC, wait for the ashes to cool and start over.

Yes?

No?

LOL, not the whole county. I enjoy my strolls in historic Laurel with the 100+ year old Victorians. Keep the history; it can be inspiring. Now on the hand, the acres and acres of 1970's garden style apartments. . .

I like the county but the only areas in pg county that need improvements are 5% of the county. The remaining county are nice, family friendly, quiet areas.
