In light of recent events will Taneytown be forced to change its name?

Interesting question, especially so since it was named after the recipient of a royal land grant prior to the American Revolution. He was the founder of Taneytown while Roger Brooke Taney is only peripherally related to the founder.

What about it.

Pomonkey is unincorporated and named after a native group, so it's more of a wide spot in the road. Taneytown is incorporated.

I've never heard Pomonkey having another name like another wide spot in the road in Charles County, Malcolm, does. It's also called Dogpatch.

I say this is the short list of targets.

1. State song
2. State flag
3. Negro Mtn.

The state song will almost certainly be changed this year. Negro Mtn. could become an renewed issue, although if memory serves there is only so much the state can do. The state flag will come under conversation, but will probably survive a bit longer.

Taneytown is probably safe unless the state has the sole power to change it. I am pretty sure the folks in Carroll County have little desire to change the name, and it is likely safe because if the slope gets that slippery names from Baltimore city to Washington County will all be under the same cloud as "being named after people who supported slavery." I don't think the current fervor will extend that far, but WDIK?

I seem to recall some delegate to the general assembly once objected to Negro Mountain. Obviously nothing came of it.

As far as the flag goes that would be interesting to see the battle lines get drawn for that one. The majority party would split down the middle.
