Well, if GovtWorker thinks you'd have to send your kids to private school if they go to the LA Plata cluster (the best one in Charles County) then I imagine it's the same for the Bowie cluster.

If you're concerned about schools, although Bowie is one of the better ones in Prince George's, the County school system is rated #2 in the state. From the bottom. Bettering only Baltimore City as the worst.

As a note, Charles' schools are firmly in the middle or a bit above in the state rankings.

There is exactly 1 elementary, 1 middle school, and 1 high school in La Plata that are decent. Every other school in Charles County is very poorly rated on GreatSchools.org, Schooldigger.com, etc..

Bowie may be a nice area with nicer homes and places to shop, but it is still in Prince George's County. The PG county school system is just awful. Crofton is Anne Arundel County though. Are you talking about Crofton?

Southern Maryland also consists of Calvert County and St. Mary's County. Calvert County has one of the best school systems in the state and St. Mary's County is rated in the top 10. You can find a very nice home in those two counties within your budget, however, the commute would be terrible to the Navy Yard if you had to make that trip every day.

Howard County (Ellicott City, Elkridge etc.) is a bit north of Bowie and has a school system just as good as Calvert County. Getting to work wouldn't really take you any longer than it would coming from Bowie. The downside is that housing is very expensive there, although you can find an older home within your budget though.

The Navy Yard has free parking, but it can be incredibly hard to find a parking space if you arrive to work in the 8-9am hour. People have had to drive around the base parking lots for well over an hour to find an open space if you arrive at that time. There is a cash lot off base, but that often gets filled too. I'd recommend arriving in the 6am hour if you can.

As far as ratings go, I'd go more with MSDE rankings than crowd input websites. Those three schools you mention would in the La Plata cluster I mentioned.

As a note, thousands of people commute to DC from Charles, Calvert and St. Mary's everyday, in both private cars and commuter buses.
