Question Working On The Eastern Shore?

I am considering a relocation to the Eastern Shore - somewhere between Easton and Salisbury.

I have loved the area for years and am now really considering a move. Real estate prices look too good to be true though... My question/concern is ... where do professionals work? I have my MBA and experience with an Engineering-Procurement-Construction company (working in Contracts and Six Sigma).

I have been doing searches for companies on the Shore, but don't see much. Am I missing a medium/large corporation out there somewhere??

Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks!

Real estate prices are too good to be true. Remember there are chicken farms everywhere here. Good for some, bad for others, especially if you live next to one, hence the cheap real estate. Im not saying all the cheaper housing falls into this category but its something to look out for.

Jobs on the shore are lacking and someone with your education and experience most definitely will end up taking a pay cut(which makes those cheaper housing prices more difficult to afford). If you really want to move here get ready for culture shock.

Im sure there are others that totally disagree w/ everything I said. I'd also bet that those ppl havent lived anywhere else other than the shore. My .02.

I live in Easton and work in Annapolis. I work in IT and there are very few jobs here in that area. The guy above is right that there are limited high paying positions on the shore. There are a few places, Shore Health, banks, etc. but no where near the number as the western shore.

House prices have come down, especially cheaper once you get to Cambridge. I have lived here most of my life, except for a few years during and after college, and have never lived anywhere near the smell of a chicken house. Yeah they are around but people make it seem like every mile you pass at least one, which is no where near true.

Housing prices have taken a nose-dive everywhere, so I'd leave that factor as less important than the job itself. I'd recommend your finding a job and then finding a property. Once you own the house, resale may take a long time. Be sure you're buying in an area you can live and work for awhile.

Thanks everybody. I spent a great deal of time on the Shore a number of years ago (when I worked in a different industry) and like it a lot. I knew jobs were slim, but didn't really know how slim. I will have to investigate the area more. Thanks!

Default Working On The Eastern Shore?

I feel your pain. My wife is from Maryland and we have been trying to get back to the Eastern Shore for months. I have 35 years experience in manufacturing related finance (cash management) and accounting. I have sent hundreds of resumes from Salisbury to Dover and made as many telephone and email follow-ups. I have received no responses-positive or negative. So good luck on your search and if you land something, let me know.
