Hi there. I'm in the process of moving to Howard County.

I'm looking for an affordable, yet safe home in a family friendly location.

I'm also hoping to find out which schools have good special education/IEP teams with decent class sizes. My child is in regular classes but receives special education for health and learning diagnosis

I'd also appreciate insight on apt search beyond zillow trulia hotpads or craigslist... pls share your secrets with me ☺️

Thanks in advance!

What is an "affordable" budget for you to rent? How many bedrooms? There are no secrets. Low-cost housing is going to be less well-kept, and it will not have luxuries like granite counter-tops. You may also have to look east of I-95.

One other source for apartments is local classified on the Columbia Patch: https://patch.com/maryland/columbia/classifieds

There is also a patch for Ellicott City and Elkridge is another option. Then there is the Pennysaver: http://www.mdpennysaver.com/classifieds-2/

I cannot help with the schools.

thank you! I appreciate your response and info... I hadn't tried either of these sites for my apt search.

My budget isn't fantastic for the area (about $1300 for a 2 bedroom + util funds) but I'm dealing with some major medical issues and it's the best I can do for now.

I'm looking for something clean, safe with play space onsite or nearby within walking distance for my youngest child. I'd really like some closets.

There are limited options for 2br apartments in Howard County under $1300. You can find some under $1400 if you go to the baltimore section of craigslist and look for apartments for rent in Columbia or Elkridge. If you are willing to consider it, one option is to look for rooms or basements for rent in people's homes (craigslist) - of course that can go really well, or not. Good luck

What is your timeline? We are also moving to the area for the schools. One of our kids has a learning disorder too. I've looked at a lot of rentals. We have a dog and the less expensive places don't have a yard, but they could work for you!

Hey there. Not sure as when, just looking. Have you had better luck? When are you looking to move?

We looked at Howard and Montgomery Counties. What areas are you looking at within Howard County? I like Ellicott City but have had a challenge with some pricing and/or condition of rentals... probably need to look more. Columbia seems to have a lot of offerings. Most of the schools seem good though a few are rated half that of some in Ellicott City and Eldridge .

We've spoken with a few people that confirmed Howard County's school systems positive rep for working with children that have additional needs. Montgomery County doesn't seem as consistent between areas (e.g. Rockville vs Damascus etc.)
