Hi. My husband and I really, really want to relocate from Baltimore County to closer to Frederick, MD. We're both underemployed - I am on UI and just started temping with a creative staffing firm (I'm an editor/writer/proofreader) and he is a coffeeshop barista. We're not bringing in enough hours or pay to support our family of 5 atm, so we have been leaning heavily on our savings (but we are trying not to drain it - it's harder than you'd think).

It's clear that we don't have a whole lot of flexibility as far as cost of living goes and that unless we find work that is higher paying, we'll be unable to move, let alone live close to Frederick, and Washington County's cost of living looks so much closer to what we might afford. I'm not sure about Hagerstown, all I know about it is from visiting my sister when she used to live there and what I've picked up from articles and forums, and I don't know much at all about the rest of Washington County. Or if there are comparably affordable and decent areas for young families in Frederick County or Carroll County. We need advice from folks familiar with the area on
  • where to look for work
  • where to look for housing (3 little girls, no pets, we homeschool but I would want to be in district for decent schools in case we have to for whatever reason put them in PS)
  • if it's possible to rent an apartment or other housing without a job in place yet.

Thanks!

Like everywhere else in the world it's about what you bring to the game.
But with THREE kids you can't all move without at LEAST one solid job lined up.

So... what real, useful, well paying skills do you each have?
And which of these skills are in short supply where you want to go?
This last Q is the toughest one for relocating.
