Hi

So I am searching for a used car and found one I like ( a corolla) at a Nissan dealer in Virginia. However, I live in Maryland and heard that the inspection in MD is one of the strictest. The dealer said I would be responsible for getting the car inspected in MD. Is there a way I can make sure the car will pass inspection before I buy it? Would a mechanic be able to tell me? Thanks so much

Must be a heck of a Corolla. And you are dealing with a dealership.

Tell the dealer you require a MD inspection or find something else.
They've done it before.

NEVER buy any used car that hasn't been inspected by the SELLER.

They are having it VA inspected, but say that I have to have it Md inspected. I did find a good mechanic who is going to come look at it and tell me if it is likely to pass.

Just say no.

One more time:

And run a carfax to make sure the odometer is accurate. I just wouldn't buy used from most dealers.
There are seller that have the service history for a car. And there are honest sellers.

I shared the concern the first time I did this, I'm not sure it's realistic for a dealer in Fredericksburg or Somerset, PA (both places I have purchased used cars) to be able to get a MD inspection. I have never had a problem getting any of the cars/trucks I bought out of state to pass MD inspection.

And there is nothing wrong with buying a used car from a dealer. In fact it's my preference as you can walk away with a temp tag, something a private seller will not be able to provide, as well as a limited warranty in many cases.

it's a Corolla, not a 20 year old Chrysler. You should be fine.

I don't see it being an issue. I bought a used Subaru in West Virginia and had no problems bringing it back to Maryland.

Can you ask them for a guarantee or a price break for the cost of the MD inspection?

The rather modest cost ($80) of the inspection is NOT the issue.

The uncertainty of not being able to get title & tags in one day is...
compounded by the 'what if' factor if the reason is serious or spendy
and that YOU are the one who will have to do all the running around getting it right.

(even with a late model toyota)

The VA based DC suburb car dealers know the score.
If they aren't willing to use their resources to get what should be a minor thing dealt with
I'm left to believe they know there is reason why the car won't pass inspection.
caveat emptor
