People in the I95 corridor are perceived, rightly in my opinion, to be rude. They prove that when they move down here to Southern Maryland and set about bringing us culture and uplifting us.

Maryland typically ranks as one of the 10 or 15 worst states in which to retire, usually around 9th.

But a large percentage of the population is rude.
Driving is generally pretty terrible (even in semi-rural and rural areas).
There is a disproportionate amount of crime.
A lot of able-bodied young people do not bother to get jobs.
Drugs are a big problem and getting worse.
We pay a lot in taxes and those taxes do not seem to go very far.
Land/housing is expensive.
Maryland probably is one of the worst states to retire to or remain living in during retirement. There are no tax benefits and the same high COL.

On the plus side we happened to be located in proximity to federal jobs, without which we'd not be too far removed from places like South Carolina or Mississippi.
Weather is a 4-season climate, which a lot of people like.
We have A LOT of water and waterfront.
There's a decent amount of "culture", but not anything that couldn't be found in most other states.

A lot of angry people in this thread.

Hopefully when you retire, and get sick you have a good hospital near by.

The a**hole quotient is low. The biggest exceptions are on these boards.

It is a bad place to retire, COL and taxes are far from what a retiree would like. It’s crowded in many areas, even the area we moved to 20 some years ago, which was supposedly the sticks. It’s a horrible state for business. Ask Bechtel, White Oak Semiconductor, Fairchild, Beretta, etc., etc. I don’t associate with people much so have little opinion about folks here based on personal contact, however, it’s a very wealthy state and that can affect the interactions people have. It’s a very political state and very well educated in many areas so people tend to have high opinions of their opinions. Baltimore is a cesspool and is leaking. So, it’s easy to see why some folks do not like it here but I see no conspiracy of hate.
