Default African American graduate student needs help on where to live

I'm an African American female in my mid 20s. I will be pursuing a Master's degree at Johns Hopkins University-Baltimore & Columbia campuses. I'm looking to live in an area in Maryland where there are other young African American professionals, graduate students, and a lively singles scene. Can someone recommend some areas for me? I will have a car so I'm open to living pretty much anywhere... well within reason because I have read about the horrible traffic in MD so I have to keep that into consideration =-) Any help you can provide will be great!! Thanks!!

Columbia is a great area- not sure about a lively singles scene, but there are a ton of restaurants/bars, and Baltimore is only 15 minutes away!

Hi sunshine! Columbia is great, lots of diversity, good shopping and food. Not too horrible of a commute (although not short). However, lively singles scene? Eh, not so much. There is the Green Turtle (a bar) but it's kind of lame.

Honestly, many areas around Baltimore and DC have diversity, good places to live, and very educated people. PG County is the wealthiest, majority African-American county in the US (but it's a little far for Hopkins).

There are areas in Baltimore city that are cute, diverse, and will be much more lively (Mt. Vernon? Check out the Baltimore thread for neighborhoods).

Welcome! And feel free to DM me with any questions and I'll see if I can help.

ANYWAY, people- she's wants ideas on where to live, not opinions about the wording of her post. Get over it and give Sunshine some ideas!

PS. I really think the Columbia area is a good bet for you, since it will be centrally located to what you're looking for. Good luck!

hi sunshine, since you will be attending JHU, i would pick something in either the b-more or columbia area. i wouldn't suggest DC b/c your commute would be terrible (although i must agree DC is much more multi-cultural than baltimore). columbia is not my cup of tea (everything looks exactly the same to me and i can never figure out where i am), but still a nice place and a good choice. i have never hung out there, so i don't know about their "singles scene". as for baltimore, i would look at charles village (tons of hopkins students there and walkable to the homewood campus) and you might like to look at mt.vernon.
