If your daughter likes the convenience of having close access to routine shopping needs, proximity to California would be a good thing. That's where you'll find the Walmart and the Target, as well as a small shopping mall, several supermarkets, several other big boxes, and other such stores. Also, the major chain restaurants are represented there, including St. Mary's County's one and only Chick-fil-A (!!). I'm not familiar enough with the local non-chain restaurants to give you any advice on that.

Leonardtown is a quick hop from California via Route 4. There's not much shopping in Leonardtown itself, though there are a couple of supermarkets at the north end of town. And that's a whole lot more than you'll find in the not-aptly-named St. Mary's "City." The closest one to there that I'm aware of is up in Calloway, which is along Route 5 about halfway between the college and Leonardtown.

They don't even have a store?
That is funny.

Looks like the college store and the gift shop at the museum are about it. Then cooks liquor is the next closest. How do the freshmen with no car get alcohol?

If you're talking about St. Mary's City, well this explains why.

Lexington Park isn't unsafe. Just a tad blue collar.

Try telling that to all the people on the "Life in Southern Maryland" chat-room forum of Southern Maryland Online™ - Your on-line community for Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's Counties.™ , they love to disparage Lexington Park, and especially Great Mills Road. Great Mills High School had a fatal shooting last year.

I lived and worked in the area and my oldest son still lives there with his family. We were a military family who only left because we had too. We visit every few months now. We are moving back there in the coming months. St. Mary’s City and the college are wonderful. Within the county there are pockets of not so great area but they are small. Don’t throw Lexington Park totally away. My son lived in an apartment complex there for roughly 10 years after we left the area. He and his wife live in Mechanicsville now. The rents and home cost are high there in part to the proximity to DC. There are people that commute there. The area is unique in that it was rural and home to mainly people who farmed or made a living off the water. Then the base expanded dramatically. With that the population boomed and many military related industries followed. They brought higher salaried individuals in. 25 years later it is still growing.
Housing selection really is so individual. We will be looking for more rural so the area around the college is perfect. Our son liked living close to things...so Lexington Park and California area fit the bill. Most of the younger folks I worked with felt the same. That’s where most of apartments will be found. Leonardtown is nice but if your daughter hates a 30 plus minute commute it would not be a good fit.
After living in Seattle and Pittsburgh area, both of which I enjoyed, I am looking forward to being back there.
