I drove around Columbia a bit just to explore. Honestly I didn't like it. The whole place looks like a boring mall. Artificial? Overpolished? I don't know how to describe it.

I might end up being in Locust Point or something, that seemed a bit nicer (not economically nicer necessarily, but nicer to live in). Still I don't really think 20 minutes... I did a "test drive" and it took me like 28 and that was on a Sunday with no rush hour. Plus I didn't actually go into the Fort since I'm not allowed to yet. Unless my GPS took me some dumb way, I think 30 mins on a good day seems more accurate than 20. Which is still fine... if every day is good...
Yeah NYC is something else... 100% with you on the public transit part

Which route did you take? If you take I95 thats going to take a lot longer then jumping on the BW parkway (295). That drops you off literally at Fort Meads doorstep (NSA headquarters entrance), and for the most part you avoid the craziness of I95

The drive is pretty consistent as you'll be going against the grain of traffic. If you use 95 it tends to get clogged at the 695 beltway and route 32 (which will be backed up durning morning rush hour). 295 is usually smooth sailing and you get to avoid 32 all together.

Thats the "norm" and explains why it took so long. 295 is "officially" a parkway but it along with route 29 act as secondary highways as they run parallel to I95.

295 runs pretty much into the heart of baltimore and will literally dump you off at the western entrance of Ft. Meade so you can avoid the hassle of 32 all together

I still am considering Locust Point (or Riverside). Not sure how ****ed up the commute will be though. I did look around there a bit and yeah it looks like a real yuppie neighborhood. I mean, I am a 27 year old white collar boring white guy relocating from somewhere else so I'd probably fit in the crowd, but that kind of crowd often means it's expensive, so I'm not sure LP/Riverside are in my price range OR commute range (but it might be in both! I just need to figure it out)

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the entrance I'm supposed to use is on 32. They haven't told me yet.

Unless they've changed the rules since I retired (which is, of course, a possibility), you can use any entrance you want. People generally use the one most convenient for their commute, then navigate to the parking lot closest to their building once inside the campus. You can get to any parking lot you want once you're on the campus (again, unless things have changed recently). This is assuming you're a fairly early arriver. If you chose a late shift, you're gonna park out in the boonies regardless of what building you're in.

I'm going to ask to do 730-330 or 8-4 or something along those lines. I can't compete with those military guys who want to start at freaking sunrise or something lol...

Last time I was on the base was when I was on leave in January of this year, still allowed to exit/enter any of the entrances lol
