Moving to Mayrland, affordable single home around ellicott city & columbia?
Hello there, We are a married couple with two babies and looking for a home within $300k-350k range. The company is between Columbia & Ellicott city, could anyone recommend us some communities/areas? We don't mind 30-40 minutes to commute, living in tiny small town but want a detached, new, and 3+ beds house.

knix2,
As someone who has lived in Columbia and Ellicott City, all I can suggest is that you look North on I-70. You might get lucky and find what you're looking for in that price range; however, with condos in the $200's+, and townhouses in the $300K-500K range, there are going to be very few if any options.
My brother lived in Jefferson which is by Frederick, you could look into that area.

If you don't mind a commute of 30-40 minutes, you might want to look in southern Carroll County (Sykesville, Eldersburg area) for a detached single family home. In Howard County you will not be able to find a detached single family home for the price you want. At most you will find townhomes if you are looking in the $300-350,000 range.

Moving to Maryland
Unfortunately, you will be hard pressed to find a single family home under $350K in Columbia. Forget Ellicott City. Your best bets are Owen Brown and Oakland Mills Villages. I have a "modest" 33 yr old 4 bdrm house in Dasher Green (part of Owen Brown) and it is assessed at $405K. There is a small split level on 6400 block of Windharp Way that has been on the market for a long time. Stevens Forest in Oakland Mills is another possibility. They have a good elementary school. Avoid Talbott Springs.
Good luck! You may need to go out Rt 70/32 to Sykesville or Mt. Airy to find a small 3 bdrm house.

We live in Westminster and you might be hard pressed to find a single in that price range even up here unless it's older. The moratorium on new construction drove prices up and now new construction starts in the 500s. 10 yo + homes in my community are selling for over 450 for 4bd. New construction on MD97 between 70 and 26 starts in the 600s. Sykesville and Eldersburg will be higher still. You can probably find a 3bd single that's about 20yo for that price range here in Westminster. It'll be right in the upper fringes of the 30-40min commute time. Carroll County has almost pulled even with Howard in home prices.

Ellicott City/Columbia MD
I am still looking into moving to MD but I can not decide where. My signaficant other currently lives in Columbia but that may be too expensive for us for a 2 bedroom. columbia is great with excellent schools but we also have to consider jobs. The next town is ellicott City which I have heard nothing but good news about. Is this true? From my research Ellicott City is more reasonable as in pricing on housing and apts than Columbia. I have a 7 year old son so good schools is a major factor as well.. I want somewhere that is diverse, good schooling with after school available. we are trying to decide on wheather to get a townhouse or an apt depending on the price. Can we get a decent apt. for about $1500 or so for a 2 bedroom? Would it make sense to get a ownhouse or an apt. Can anyone please help.
