Moving to APG too!
Hi All -
My name is Janet and we just got word that my husband is on the list for relocation to APG in 2009. I kind of thought we had more time - but it's much closer than we thought! We currently live in Ocean County, NJ and my husband works at Ft Monmouth (almost 45 minute commute).
So we have been trying to read these forums to get some answers - it is so overwhelming moving to a place where you know nothing! We have a 3 yr old and a 1 yr old - so obviously schools and safety are important. I see here that many people have mentioned Bel Air. I guess that's the place to go? I am a SAHM, so I need good libraries and parks - lol!
How far is the commute from Bel Air to APG? What about property taxes? Anyone know anything about Cecil County? Good towns to look in there?
Thanks and can't wait to get to know all of you!
Oh - 1 more thing - were you given a month or a specific date they wanted you there by?
Thanks!

The commute is about 15 to 20 minute from Bel Air to Aberdeen. The taxes depending on what you live in and where you live. In Bel Air taxes on a 2200-2500 sgft house will probably run you around $4000.00 a year. Cecil county is a nice area just not as convenient to everything. But definitely less expense. I actually live in Harford county and I am Real estate Broker. If you have anymore RE questions please don't hesitate and ask.

ksbandy....i am coming to the APG area in the coming days...would you be able to help me out. I am looking to rent a townhome with a good school system. From what i've read bel air, havre de grace and abingdon seem to be like my best choices. I truly don't want a commute any longer than about 20mins or so. i am coming from Ft.Campbell, Ky where you the convenience of shopping but still have the opportunity to live in a quiet neighborhood.

We are also from New Jersey. We chose Patriots Glen, a golf coarse community in Cecil County. Alot depends on your lifestyle. We happen to like it because it is so close to New Jersey. Which is nice if you still have ties there! Its gets negative press but coming from Clarksville---- nothing will surprise you. Good Luck!

We are coming from Fort Monmouth too. We actually chose Delaware though. I like to come on this forum though, because we are right on the border and to see what people say about Md. The commute is exactly 35 min. Taxes are much better there and we could get more for our money. The school district is great too. We did look at Bel Air and liked that a lot too, but it was way too expensive for us. We did not even consider Cecil County, we figure for 10 more min we would be in De. where it was cheaper.

Oh good! Someone else from the border region who is able to shed a positive light on the area. We ,too, looked in Delaware. Nice area. We just happen to get a great deal on our home. "They" get your money no matter how you slice it! By the way, I am not a realtor, just a selfish Jersey transplant, who would love to see the area benefit from growth.

We are moving from NJ to Maryland as well (currently live in Toms River)....although not with BRAC. We have heard all sorts of positives and negatives about different areas. After visiting many, many times our opinions are much different after seeing things for ourselves. We have been pleasantly suprised with Cecil County. As mentioned in a previous post, it is closer to NJ for trips back for family, etc. The people in the neighborhoods that we looked at in Cecil were all very friendly...coming out to say hello and tell us about the area. We are still looking and will be going down again this weekend. Our children will be finishing school soon so we are ready to make an offer and go.

We live in Harford County. We have lived here all of our lives. We live in Forest Hill, which is a very nice community with excellent schools. We are actually thinking of renting our home to a responsible family so my husband can move closer to his work. We have a 4 bedroom house in a neighborhood which is walking distance to Forest Lakes Elementary School. It is an excellent neighborhood and we would be very sad to leave since we have completely renovated our kitchen and custom remodeled our basement. That said...Does anyone know any place where we could put our house up for rent for BRAC families?
