With no wish to engage in Schadenfreude on the other effects of Hurricane Laura, or prolong the thread, this one falls in the category of poetic justice. City votes to retain a confederate statue, then Laura topples it.

There is a Frederick Douglas statue that is next to the Talbot County Boys. I wonder if pressured, would the city vote to remove Frederick Douglas?

Pressured for what? Douglas didn't do anything to be ashamed of.

Talbot is 78% white, while MD is on the cusp of becoming majority minority, currently 50.2% non hispanic white.

Unfamiliarity with minorities and PoC generally may be part of the problem. Multicultural societies tend to be much more vibrant and progressive than monocultural. It's the same the world over. Also applies to mono theoistic cultures. It's a multicultural world out there. You can run but you can't hide. It's no secret that both R's and D's have changed, and are further apart than previously. I believe D's have changed less than R's.

I meant to get back to this one sooner but it slipped by me. You absolutely asserted that Westside and I were "unfamiliar" with minorities due to where we live and that was "part of the problem".

Others understood what I meant, why didn't you?

For someone else: a Frederick Douglass statue has indeed been vandalized recently.

Dang! You already pointed this out, and I already apologised, here. (Note, I said "might" be part of the problem).

On another thread today you asked me what were "tweets". You may be having a senior, senior moment.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but worth noting.

A HUAC-y idea:At the height of his railing against “cancel culture” earlier this summer, President Trump issued an executive order creating the Interagency Task Force for Building and Rebuilding Monuments to American Heroes and asked state and local leaders to make recommendations on historical figures who should be honored with a monument or statue to be featured in his proposed National Garden of American Heroes. State Sens. Michael J. Hough (R-Frederick) and Justin D. Ready (R-Carroll) are*submitting the name of Whittaker Chambers, the anti-Communist crusader who lived in Westminster, for consideration.

Why do I believe you are against making it subject to the will of the people because you don't even live in Maryland, let alone Talbot County, and will never have a say to make it be what you want it to be?

And yet, you are against letting them decide what is allowed to happen in their own neighborhoods.

In my opinion, the Talbot officials did not abdicate their chance to make a decision. They, in fact, decide to avoid the chance to let a vocal minority to influence them to make a decision against the possible wishes of the majority. Then there is the recent evidence that, if they take a stand against the vocal minority, they run the risk of having their personal lives disrupted by what should be considered illegal means.

I cannot blame the Talbot officials for making the decision they have.

The narrative that it is best left to those who live in a distinct locality to make their own decisions? I could care less what statues are in Talbot. I do care when a minority of unelected people decide against the wish of the majority. I was not particularly happy about what the Taliban did in Afghanistan years ago, destroying monuments. I thought it was stupid. Not worth going to war about it though, but I don't believe that was the only reason we got involved.

If you consider my narrative often wrong, then it is because it disagrees with your "often wrong" narrative. See how that works? I'll wear your disagreement with my principles with pride.
