The question is kind of off-topic for Maryland. Chapel Hill is a liberal stronghold, but much smaller and more peaceful than DC or Philly. It is very expensive place for retirement.

I was curious because I had a friend who went to school in Chapel Hill and loved it. Sorry for drifting off topic.....

OP is weather important to you? Because you should be aware there is a huge difference in weather between north of Baltimore and Cumberland and western Maryland where it is much colder. As for politics once you leave the burbs just about every area will be conservative in MD and WV.

At least you have a mountain woman to keep you warm?

I really appreciate your tuning in to the issues I am trying to weigh in our decision to move. I thought that the climate, i.e. weather, north of Baltimore was wonderful overall with the exception of high humidity in the summer. The winters here in northern Ohio take some getting used to. It is very cold and cloudy from late November to early April, with a daily dusting of snow. The summers here are great, but short. I would not mind a return to some warmer climate.
In terms of priorities, number one is a scenic place with some privacy, not too remote from a quality town of like minded people. Second is a small stone home in the British style with character and craftsmanship. I prefer to be around people who lean to the right or at least don't need to shout self righteous liberalism. In other words, a high quality peaceful place.
Thanks for your thoughts.

I don't encounter any of that here in the northern central part of Baltimore County, no quite the contrary, I occasionally encounter the opposite. But neither is very common unless you get close to the line. And still it's not in your face.

And it's peaceful all over the place around here. One would think that you and your wife aren't from here. Puzzled.

I am trying to figure out where you are going to live like what you are describing......unless driving 5 miles, or more to the grocery store is your thing. And not having many options.

You are not going to find all Stone Houses in your price range unless you are willing to live remote. They will mostly be in the city, or very near it. Otherwise many $'s in maybe Greenspring Valley. Or Roland Park which is not what you want, or can afford.

You make it sound like northern Ohio winters aren't rough. They are brutal compared to here. Cleveland averages 54 Inches of snowfall in the winter. The record in the Baltimore Metro was 74 Inches in 2009-10. Average is 20 Inches.

I have relatives that moved to Ashtabula and they are always talking about snowfall.

Now how far north you are in Ohio I do not know........

BOL.......

I grew up in Stark County, Ohio. I was happy to get away from the gray skies year round. Whenever i went back, before my father passed away, it seemed like the humidity there was oppressive compared to here. I've lived in Anne Arundel county and Queen Anne's county, specifically Kent Island.

The areas west of I95, and both beltways of DC and Baltimore generally have worse winter weather. The areas east of I95 and south of Baltimore are more temperate in the winter. Also, if you pick a place with water views of the Bay, you will get more cooling breezes in the summer. The water in the bay seems to hold the temperatures muted, in that when it is cold, the closer the bay you are, it is usually a little warmer, It usually works the other way around in the summer, too. The problem is, if you want sizable acreage near the bay, it will cost you. If you can do with less you can find something with a view of the bay.

If you are into snow and/or snow sports, stay to the west.

I'm from Baltimore County and a sister lives in Carroll County. The rolling hills you seek can be found across the "northern tier" of MD, from Hampstead west to Hancock and up to PA on the north.

PA has some tax advantages for retirees but some tax hits on estates. IIRC, Social Security, federal civil service retirement benefits, military retirement benefits and employer sponsored retirement plan benefits are exempt from state income tax. Distributions from a 401-k plan, IRAs, and federal Thrift Saving Plan (TSP) are exempt from state income tax for retirees age 59.5 and above. I've friends in the Gettysburg area and it's lovely up there.

Hampstead wouldn't be bad, but where are the stone houses? Hancock is pretty remote. You can pay less in Taxes in PA, but you will come down here for everything.....I have relatives near Gettysburg....it's a perfect fit for them.
