Hogan has been trying to create incentives for retirees to stay in Maryland since 2014 but he's gotten no cooperation from the legislature. Will the bleeding ever stop? Delaware has very low property taxes and no sales tax, It's hard to compete with that.

Maryland is a transient state. Many people come here for work and when that's done return to where they're from.

Yes, cost has some input to people leaving but I'd bet not as much as thought. Housing cost is one factor (but property taxes may not be when you look at other states like PA) and the income tax on retirement income certainly is for wealthier people.

You'd think with all the people in this Forum who say "I'm retiring and need a place that has world class medical care" that geezers would be lined up on all the roads coming in to the state.

As far as the Legislature many of them probably embody what an O'Malley Administration official told me once, that retirees are useless eaters.

Honestly, I don’t see a lot of people retiring in Maryland. Too expensive, too much traffic, too much crime. Most people are moving to Delaware or Florida.

A lot of times people don't want to leave their kids and grandkids so they stay. For those willing to move there is quite a discrepancy between what it costs to live in Delaware versus Maryland and I've lived in both.

Count me in. We were thinking Chestertown but just a little further into Delaware and we would actually save money.

I doubt many people move here to retire, and many do leave. We were set to do just that until we changed our minds and decided to stay because we love it here. It would be nice if the state changed some things but we aren't counting on that.

You might be surprised. I can think between a half dozen and dozen here in Town who did just that. Some of them it was a connection to the area from time in the military and some because it was cheaper here than where they were (Massachusetts and non-NYC New York). Also was to be nearer their grown with families of their own kids.

Yeah good point. I had not considered resort towns such as North Beach, Rock Hall, Havre de Grace etc. which would be appealing to some out of state retirees.

Bay towns are somewhat magnets for the well off retired (as opposed to long time resident retirees such as myself). You could add Cambridge, Easton, Denton, Crisfield, Ocean City, Solomon's, Chesapeake Beach (although it attracts, as does North Beach and the rest of Calvert County a lot of FedGov posers) plus several more.

"Well off" are the key words. Living in a resort town is expensive. Meals, groceries, most everything. It has to be for obvious reasons. So yes those people may be interested in those MD beach towns, but that's not the normal retiree situation. And we are losing far more than we are gaining and that's a problem I believe. We may not generate the payroll taxes of a working couple but we still pay a lot of taxes.
