I'm looking for a reliable shop (not a web cite) to buy 220 volt appliances in Virginia or Maryland.

There is a place in downtown DC at...ummm...well they have two stores I guess.

Eportworld.

Address:
1719 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington DC 20009.
1030 19th St. NW, Washington DC 20036

You will pay a bit of a premium.

What are you looking to buy?

I purchased a refrigerator, washer, dryer, range, dishwasher and two televisions fromn 220TOGO in Rockville, MD 5465 Randolph Rd. They were able to explain my votage needs properly, unlike the salespeople at HH GReg who did not care that they sold me appliances that would not work in Ghana. I returned everything to HH GReg and then went to 220togo and bought everything with the proper voltages 240 volt 50Hz. 240-242-4870

Too bad I sold my transformer on e-bay a couple months ago.

Instead of buying the actual appliance, you guys should consider:
http://www.amazon.com/Bright-VC500W-.../dp/B000MX1QXA

Converts 110/120 into 220/240.

The input should be in the back and I'm not necessarily advocating you purchase from Amazon, you can get your wares from wherever you choose. Why buy the actual appliance when you can just use one of these bad boys?

The garden variety plug adapters don't convert voltage or frequency. The gizmo in post #6 converts voltage but not frequency. The typical "wall wart" that powers electronics rectifies the AC power to DC so frequency does not matter so much for these.

Certain (especially older) appliances that have motors depend on the frequency to control the turn rate of the motors. I saw this in a review of a similar product: "Oh, and for fellow Brits in the US - remember it converts the voltage but not the Hz so 99% of UK electrical items work fine but a record turntable will turn The Cure into The Chipmunks!"
