After hearing awful stories of how "citylike" and "dangerous" PG county is, I was afraid to move here from Montgomery County. However, you must remember that PG is HUGE and it does have some of the most violent cities within it, however Bowie is a true gem. It is the "Bethesda" of PG. We have tons of shopping and restaraunts within 5 minutes of anywhere in Bowie, tons of jogging paths and parks, and we got a police force a couple of years ago to make you feel even more secure. I would definately say crime is not a problem here; if compared to Oxon Hill or Capitol Heights or even Suitland it's non- existent. Best of all is you could actually live here without a car. We have an extensive bus service running thru the neighborhoods, the Bowie Park and Ride is at the Town Center, or you could drive 15 mins to New Carrollton and Metro to DC. From front door to office door (generally) for a Bowie Metro and Bus user to downtown is one hour. A great time to read or nap- and save gas!

Come check Bowie out, take 50 to collington rd (east) and see Bowie Town Center. Turn left down Northview and you're at the movie theater and park and ride bus lot. Turn right on Northview and check out Allen Pond Park (More than a park, esp during summer weekend sunset concerts and every holiday).

I know alot of the homes here have rented out their basements as apartment units, check papers. Also, many people have found roomates or friends to rent out a townhouse in the area. There are apartments off 301 but they will kill you on rent, you'd be better off buying.

Bottom line- PG is most affordable. Bowie is the best in PG. Bowie is the best suburb you can find this close to DC. Alot of people are in a real estate crisis and may be willing to workout a cheap rent deal for you. Hope this helped.
In PG, I would agree that Bowie is a pretty good area to live, and close to DC.

I'm moving to MD from NYC as well. And I've been looking for apartments in Columbia, which I was told is 30-40 minutes to DC. I've found a place in the upper $800/low $900 called Dominion at Eden Brook (going to check it out in a few weeks). It may be slightly out of your price range but for a few extra dollars the amenities are great especially when you compare it to nyc apartments =-). Check out the website Search Apartments for Rent at United Dominion (UDR). Find Apartment Guide Rentals for Smart Apartment Living, Locate Pet Friendly Apartment Unit. and search under Maryland. Also try apartments.com or apartmentguide.com and search by your price range to get an idea of the areas that fit your price requirements.

Well living in P.G. most of my life I can really tell you. While P.G. has it's hot spots of crime. It is a big county. The following cities are okay Upper Marlboro, Bowie, Greenbelt, Fort Washington, parts of Hyattsville (really try to build up), parts of Temple Hills and Oxon Hill are okay. Just remember to keep your eyes open. Living here I haven't experienced anything bad happening to me. Lets face it crime can happen In Montgomery County and Fairfax County too as well . P.G. county is really trying to improve the image. Here is a site to list up and coming developments in the areas closer to D.C. are going to be where you find 850-900. I'll put it to you this way If you want to get down here, then your going to have to do what you have to do. At least it is close to metro and shopping centers. The only other alternative I can suggest is get a room mate. P.G. county will be your cheapest alternative without having to travel and hour to work. Development Projects

Jayman: you missed other nice areas to live.

Laurel,Mitcheville,Clinton,Aquasco,Brandywine,Wald orf. yes part of Waldorf is in Pg County.

Hyattsville is getting a major face lift.

The county next step is improving Pg side of Langley park.
The County have already issued the changes that will start ASAP such as increasing police,no more abandon cars on the street,More safety such as cross signs.
I just read this the other day. I will post the link.

I do know their was a longer this.

Hyattsville is the next area the County is focusing on. Which is good because Hyattsville is in a good location.

Iscalder. Sorry I missed those areas. I will have to correct you. Waldorf is in Charles County. I live there. Nice community just too dag on far. If it weren't for my daugthers needing a good school system, I would have stayed in P.G. P.G. has a Lot of good things coming up in the county. I truly believe that P.G. will get there act together and start investing in to the schools. It will be cheaper in the long run for them to invest into the kids. This will help create a thriving workforce in the county. Hopefully county leadership will recognize this.

Hey just out of curiosity...are the Maryland and Virginia areas close to D.C. getting a huge influx of people from NY and NJ? My fiance and I are thinking about relocating in a year or two after we are married and we want to get out of the rat race we have here in NJ. I know the D.C. area is very similar to NJ in terms of that and traffic, but would I be correct in assuming that all of the suburbs "yous guys" (had to say it LOL) named are pretty nice and not as hustle and bustle?

I am a teacher and she works in HR. I figured I can work wherever really, but are most of the better paying HR jobs in D.C.?
