Let's face it folks...Salisbury is growing up whether we like it or not. With that, some of the imports are going to bring their habits with them. I was burglarized for a total of over $9000.00 and it pissed me off.
Fiddlefeet, I have no unreasonable fear/hatred of foreigners (xenophobia for those of us whom you are trying to impress or to give a vocab lesson), but I do have hatred for drug dealers, murderers, rapists, thieves, etc...You should know better than to leave your car unlocked and your sister should know better than to leave her's running. These are tough lessons learned! As for SU, it is a fine institution with some excellent programs, including nursing and especially for a region of this size. I know a woman who has been in nursing for 30 years here and she has done very well and has been treated kindly and repectfully. As far as your hatred for Salisbury, It is not really a bad place to be and I applaude sbyman for sticking up for it. Beaches, bays, rivers, parks, schools, universities, shopping, seafood, sports...It seems to me that no matter where you go, you are not going to find complete happiness, until you are happy with yourself.
Maybe not a big deal for you sbyman, but then again you probably either don't have 9 grand worth of anything, don't have any regard for anyone but yourself or maybe you are one of these imports I spoke of earlier. I have been here a long time and we used to go to bed without locking the doors. Now I sleep on the main floor of our home with a 12 guage in case I have to protect my family. It is sad to see these changes in our community. Your "whatever" attitude is part of the problem. Crime sucks no matter how you look at is or try to diminish it. When it happens to you, it just sucks!
Your young at age 20 and you can still influence the young guys and girls. IF you want to make a difference and take some true ownership in Salisbury and your community, I say put your money where your mouth is. Volunteer at the Salvation Army, be a Big Brother, sign up in the Wicomico Mentoring Project, be a scouting volunteer, start a youth group at church...My words may sound harsh to you, but I got your attention and instead of getting angry at me, use that fire to do something to help. It will pay you back a thousand times over by the time you are my age. Good Luck!!!

If you honestly believe that the only reason for crime in the area is due to the "imports" moving in you are sadly mistaken. Salisbury, or the eastern shore for that matter, isnt the end all be all place to live. Crime is high for the small amount of population, jobs are lacking compared to the high real estate prices and if you want entertainment(real entertainment, not just dinner and a movie) you have to drive to Ocean City or Baltimore). Crime will continue to rise on the shore as long as the low pay scale job market is alive and well here. Blaming the crime on "imports" is a stereotypical eastern shore "good-ol boy" thing to do. Point the finger at everyone else instead of having a logical understanding of the problem.

Poppa
We moved to Salisbury from Columbia, MD 30 years ago. Our three boys attended Salisbury schools and all three graduated from Parkside High School. When we moved here we were impressed with the fact that there had only been one murder in Salisbury the year before. I'm sure that has changed but don't know what the number is. We grew up in the Baltimore area. I just heard on TV this week that there were 2400 murders in Baltimore last year and half of them remain unsolved.
While traffic has increased since we moved here, it's easy to get around. We moved to Parsonsburg, MD 15 years ago. Parsonsburg only has one gas station, one Convenience Store, one Country Store, a Post Office and the ever present Volunteer Fire Department. But Parsonsburg is only nine miles from Salisbury and just seven miles from the major shopping center in the area. And from Parsonsburg you can use Rt.50, or the back roads to get to all the shopping centers.
The major Super Markets in the area are Food Lion, (5) Giant (1) Super Fresh (1) Wal-Mart (2) including a Super Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. Fast Food Restaurants are well represented including but not limited to McDonalds (5), Hardees (3) Arbys (3), Taco Bell (1), Burger King (3), KFC (1), Long John Silvers (1), Wendy's (2), Pizza Hut (2). There are many eat in restaurants where you will find Seafood, Italian, Chinese, Indian etc. There's a Bob Evans and a Golden Corral and several upper level Steak Houses. For a taste of the New York/ New Jersey Dinners there's The Sage Dinner.
Salisbury maintains a population of about 40-50,000, but is the main shopping area for over 250,000.
And there are churches of most every denomination.
Hope this information is helpful, tried to think of what may be of interest to you.

Murders in Baltimore in 2007
Your right jonjj, I was wrong when I posted 2400 murders in Baltimore in 2007. I did hear that on a TV show from Baltimore about the crime there. But they must have been talking about a longer period of time.
I got this from Google...
BALTIMORE ( Map (broken link), News) - Baltimore ended the year with the city's highest murder rate in eight years, despite a new police commissioner's modest success in slowing the spike in homicides.
The city recorded 282 homicides in 2007, a slight increase over the previous year and the highest total since 1999, when 305 people were slain.

It went on to say that there were 1,000 unsolved murders in Baltimore since 1990.

We also are looking to move to marylands lower eastern shore. We currently live in West Virginia so being close to things dont matter to me. I am concerned about crime, and schools. Our problem is we can't seem to find rentals. Being out of state, and trying to find out about rentals is horrible. Does anyone have a clue as to how to find rentals, and especially ones that allow pets

I agree - Salisbury is a miserable place in and of itself. If you are looking for close proximity to the shore or to the college, then it serves a purpose but it is not a place to call home. If you must work in Salisbury -even that is tricky becuase of the odd mentality there - live outside the town and commute in. We worked in Salisbury for 4 years and it was really hard to get folks who were conscientous, with a good work ethic or even kind. Good luck!

are you crazy?
I can't believe anyone would say that the Eastern Shore is a horrible place to live.. My entire family is from there...I was raised my whole life in Delmar/Salisbury. Yes...it has crime, and so does every other city in this country.
Hy husband is from DC, and we currently live in VA Beach due to my husband being in the Navy. This area has so much more crime in just one week than I have ever seen my entire life in Salisbury.
Salisbury is a great place to live. It's close to the beach, it has good school districts, decent shopping, nice restaurants, and close to many big cities.

I have to say with the way salisbury is going if you are renting from gni i would make sure you have renters insurance cause the police around here are garbage i had my house broken into on june 2 while i was in the hospital having a baby. I did my own investigation and discovered who it was. I had names and addresses and a witness. The police sent me a letter a month and a half later saying my case was on hold because they had no leads. Mean while at my job an employee had his ipod stolen and the police did a full i mean full investagation. The searched peoples house and everything. So to make a long story short get renters insurance or move in at night.
