I'm moving to MD from the 'burbs of Philly. I want to live in Howard County for the school district. I lived in Columbia some time ago and have heard of changes.

How diverse is Columbia/Ell City/Elk Ridge? What pre schools would anyone recommend? What areas are safe to live in? What about Jessup? Parts of Laurel? As I recall, the neighborhoods closer to the Target on 175 were not the best.

I'll rent at first, but after a year hope to buy. Moving in about 5 weeks. Any sugggestions/advice would be welcome.

Columbia/Ell. City and Elk Ridge are all very diverse. I would chose Columbia of the 3 you listed as the "safest" but like anywhere now-a-days every please has its good and its bad. Howard county is nice as not all of the houses are jammed right onto of each other but it's very pricey and being over developed too.

Actually, of the three, Columbia is not the safest. Columbia has a few neighborhoods that have substantially more crime than others in Columbia do. You're right about the neighborhoods around Target.
Elkridge has some really nice neighborhoods, and a few that aren't as nice- like some of the areas close to Rte 1. In Elkridge I'd look at places close to Rte 103, or Rte 108 (near the new shopping center). Ellicott City is mostly a great area- especially the 21043 zip code.

Default Thanks

I remember when they built the Target close to 103 & 100 but couldn't remember if that was considered Columbia or Ellicott City.

What do you all know about schools? I'm going to base my move on elementary schools. Again, schools closer to the center of Columbia?

I don't know much about the schools in Ellicott City.

Thanks again for your feedback!

That Target is Ellicott City. The target I was talking about is on rte 175.
Ellicott City schools are excellent. The elementary schools in Columbia, would have to be judged based on each particular school, I think it varies quite a bit. A few Elementary schools that I know are good are Rockburn in Elkridge, and Worthington in Ellicott City.
