Hyattsville Safety
I'm interning in D.C. this summer and I found a really great deal on an apartment in Hyattsville (Plaza Towers, across from the mall). Although a couple other college students have lived in the place, I'm slightly concerned about safety. Specifically, would it be a bad idea to walk back from the Metro station after 7 or 8 o'clock carrying a laptop, or am I just overly worried? Thanks.

I wouldn't. There's a lot of crime in that area. You will of course, hear from some people who will say that there isn't, but I grew up nearby and return to the area frequently- and I wouldn't live near there. I pay very close attention to the news from the Hyattsville/Riverdale area, and there is a lot of crime. The good news is, it appears that they are trying to revitalize some of those areas.

Someone was shot in one of the towers a month or so a go, and someone was also shot across the street. I know someone who lives close by and my friend wants to move as soon as the lease is up. I would advise against it.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I was afraid of, but I'm already locked into the apartment. At least it's (sort of) cheap.

If you're already locked into that apartment, than I guess the best thing for you to do is to be constantly aware of your surroundings when you're walking back and forth from the metro station and try not to walk by yourself, this is from a person who was born and raised in the area, but that would apply to any place. Good luck

I've talked to the folks doing the sublet, and they both seemed to think the area was safe enough, or at least safer than parts of D.C. anyway. Thanks for all your help. I'll be careful.
