Default If not Frederick, Ellicott City

Of all the comments, I must share that Frederick seems to have a pretty decent reputation, and is smaller and more relaxing than the big cities. If I moved a fair distance west of Baltimore, I would consider Frederick. However, I do agree with the post about Ellicott City. It is a real growing residential area, clean, with lots of shopping, nature nearby at Patapsco State Park, and even a very charming historical old Ellicott City area. Perhaps I could give you some tips on some homes, if I knew the style or price you like. I do not recall anyone mention Owings Mills area, which also has a lot of amenities and shopping as well as safe neighborhoods. I would prefer my family to be in Owings Mills, Frederick, Ellicott City, or in northeast Baltimore where we now live. North Baltimore is close to 95 and 695 as well as 83, which will put you into those northern areas of Maryland. [moderator CUT]

Default Hello

Hello from Maryland!!

Wow thank you all so much for the information!! We finally are all moved and living just 7 miles west of Frederick in a very small but very quaint town by the name of Myersville. It is very nice here and I have driven all over this area. Can you say LUSH ! I had no idea how beautiful Maryland was. We really wanted to find a place in Westminster as I really liked it there but we had no luck finding a place to rent. I just love the downtown area of Westminster as well as the convenient shopping all off of the main street. Don't get me wrong I really like Frederick but shopping is a bit harder to navigate. I love the downtown of Frederick as well!! It is just so full of character and bustling on the weekends! Tremendously beautiful and quaint just about everywhere you go in Frederick or Carroll counties! I would not want to live near DC so that is definitely out. We took a drive up to Silver Spring and College Park where there is an Ikea store that was amazing! But the traffic and congestion was way to much for me. Maryland is in my opinion incredibly unique and very diverse in so many ways. I mean there are the big cities of Baltimore and DC but most of Maryland from what I have seen is very rural with small historic towns that are so charming. I haven't really checked out Baltimore yet and am looking forward to it. It is nice to know there is a big city fairly close by but not too close.. lol!
Anyway I just wanted to check back and let all of you that responded to my query know that I am here and find Maryland to be a great place to live!!!

Glad you found a winner

Myersville is a town I don't know too much about, but it occasionally flashes by me in terms of road signs and homes for sale - seems like a typical quiet Frederick County town.

Enjoy!

Default perfect place

i was born in maryland so i know the places.in maryland on georgia ave. in silver spring,is very quiet but if you go deep down in silver spring thats where most of the gangs are.i lived in that area.there is mostly spanish and black in the part of silver spring which is near to rockville, but they are very friendly.i wouldn't say any part of maryland is safe but montgomery county is known for some dangerous parts that have gangs and stuff but there are some safe cities like gaithersburgh.

Hello from New Zealand. I am looking at a new job that may require me to move to Maryland. The company is in Bethesda. I'd be interested in the best places to rent a family home on a moderate income and with handy transport links as I won't have a vehicle, at least initially. But, most of all, I'd like to know the suburbs/areas that I should steer clear of. Every city has them and I don't want to waste my time looking in areas that I'd regret. Any advice would be appreciated.

Terri,
Frederick is an awesome town with lots to do with the little ones. We have three little ones ages 4 and under. Baker Park, in downtown Frederick, offers summer concerts and plays for children every Saturday night in the summer, adult concerts on Sunday nights (family friendly). In the winter they have St. Nick parade, Christmas caroling and horse drawn carriage rides. Fourth of July offers concerts and fireworks also at Baker Park and numerous other family friendly venues throughout the year. Sure, Frederick is getting a bit pricey, along with many other places in MD, but in my opinion, if you can swing it it is a great place to raise a family! There is a wide variety of housing options. Try the Ballenger area... there is a great park there and it is close to the new movie theater which offer free children's movies in the AM in the summer (we walk there). Hope this helps.

Default I am looking to invest in Real estate.....

I am loooking to invest in real estate in Md However, I am new to the area and am not that savy in the area yet. I'm unsure where is smart to buy and where is not. Where do you recommend purchasing or where do you think would be a wise place to invest?

I was thinking maybe a well desired place to live that has has a drastic fall in housing prices, possible some foreslosure buyouts? Or, up and coming hot spots that required holding onto for a while?? Or hot spots for renters/commuters into the major cities? Or any places that land is becoming scarce? Let me know your thoughts!! Thanks in adavance!

I think the neighborhood my family lives in in Westminster is called Chazadale South - nice homes on big plots of land, probably $325-400K.

New Market, though, is expensive. You can still find decent townhomes and old ranchers in the $300K range if you're lucky.

Good luck!

What about the new TH from N/V homes in Silver Spring, I dont have the address but I do know the zip code is 20904 and they are like 4-5 miles from new hampshire ave. And you say gaithersburg is a safe city but all I read about gaithersburg in this forum is really bad. I stay there 3 months and I mostly liked it I'm confused

I will be relocating to Maryland to work in Talbot county area. I am looking for nice, safe location that is affordable. I have not klived in an apartment in a very long time, and much prefer a small house ot TH to rent for now. I am not one that must live next door to the Walmart or shopping centers. I am more the suburbs kinda guy. Any suggestions?
