Garrett County is very beautiful. If you don't want as much snow than say Oakland..move to Bloomington. It's a little town that sits at the bottom of the mountian. The mountain that you have to go down to get to it is very very dangerous. Many bad accidents have happened there. I have talked to many people in Bloomington and they say that when Oakland and other areas are getting dumped on they hardly get any. My brother lives up there in Oakland and he says the county commissioners won't allow the big industrial jobs to come up there and if they do approve it they make them only pay a certain amount. In a way that is good just because it keeps the town small and quaint. It is true, usually people know everyones name. The graveyard near my brother still hand dig their graves. You can still buy a house up there for under 100k. Autumn Glory is a wonderful event. It happens in October, but you can still get snow during this time. The main places to go to shop are either Morgantown or Unionville. Of course you can go to Lavale, but usually people travel to the other places. Once you live in Oakland, you only go to the 'lake" area when you maybe want to get on the lake. There are other unknown lakes up there that the "tourones" dont go to. Broadford Lake is a beautiful place. I'm not sure if you have children or not, but all the kids ride on the buses together. There isn't a seperate bus for elementary, middle and high. There is no emissions testing on your cars in Garrett County. The MVA in Oakland is only open on Tuesday and Thursdays. Most people that I have spoken too usually drive to Cumberland or Morgantown to work. There are a few that drive to Pittsburgh everyday. Of course if you think about it, that isn't bad because if you live in Frederick and have to drive to Rockville, 270 will make you take that long as well. No alcohol sales on Sunday as well. There is an auction in Terra Alta that alot go to. If you like the small town feel then Garrett County is for you. The Deep Creek bridge is what divides Northern and Southern Garrett. They use cinders on the roads up there when it snows. Dont expect completely clean roads. This past year I do believe they got like 102 inches of snow. Dont hold me to this.

Coolman said "And realistically, Garrett Countians draw that line even further West."
One of my good buddies is from Friendsville. I was talking with him about one of our mutual friends. I mentioned that this friend's mom was from Garrett County. He perked up and asked "Really, Where is Garrett County?" "Grantsville," I said. He scoffed and replied "Grantsville? That's not really Garrett County, it is just a suburb of Frostburg!" |

Speaking of weather differences in Garrett County from the rest of the state, even neighboring Allegany County....I was once asked by an resident of Oakland where I lived, I responded "Cumberland", they replied, "Oh, you mean Little Miami?"

Wvugirl, that is hilarious. Cumberland can get very hot. It is in a valley and really traps the hot air. It has been over 90 and humid all week there. It normally cools down pretty well at night, but compared to Garrett County and even Frostburg it is downright tropical!

Cumberland weather is like Frederick weather...everyone in Garrett County considers every other county down state. Like I said Bloomington doesn't get the same weather as everyone else up there.

Garrett County is a wonderful place. Anyone looking for property, check out Sweet Rewards Farm. It is close to the lake activities, but still in a farm setting. Public water, sewer, and utilities, paved roads overlook 2 ponds and the rest of the farm. Wonderful place to be with views that are just imagineable! Railey Realty has the lots for sale. What a bargain also. Much less then those on the slopes, but you are only minutes away and out of the hustle of the lake action. Best of all worlds. Great community to raise children.
