If any form of public transportation could keep the commute under 1 1/2 hours I would gladly use it. It looks like a Haggerstown commute would generally be under 1 1/2 hour, surely with occasional exceptions.

Does anyone have insight into the parochial schools near by?

No prob. When I said be careful of certain communties, it has something to do with who build the house and if you are buying a "used" home, try to find out more about previous owner, it tells a lot about how they use their home if you see what I mean. A nice big house with stone elevation, bells and whistles interior doesn't always mean good, you just need to be cautious.

As to using and trusting an agent, don't count on them too much (applies in this particular area, IMHO). I find what they care most about how many listings they have, how much commission they can get from selling new built homes, plus not doing enough homework to help out-of-state people for their relocation. Of course they are some exceptionally good ones, but not many. It's still good to have an agent though because that's the only way you can get in to see those houses.

Hagerstown is quite nice in a rural way that is missing from most of Montgomery (Rockville) or Frederick (Frederick) Counties. Here is some Chamber of Commerce type information - I am sure they could tell you about the schools:

Default Areas around hagerstown

Hagerstown area is great. I have lived there for over 10 years now. I would say the schools are good. The area is pretty key on how good the school is. Areas around Hagerstown have the best schools i'd say. Smithsburg has very good schools, that is just east of hagerstown. Housing prices in hagerstown area great right now. lots of houses on the market. For the best neighborhoods stay away from the center of the city.
hope this helps.
