The kids at the library are just that......kids hanging out. Where else do you want them to go? The park? Then there would be "gangs" at the park. People really need to wake up and see things for what they really are. Don't believe all that you hear. Why don't the fights in the Bel Air bars, where people get beat down make the news? Because the media has done a fantastic job at making all of southern HarCo look like a war zone. Yes, there's crime....as there is in Bel Air and all other areas of every county in the country. My stepkids live in Abingdon and will attend Edgewood High but we have no real worries because we are good parents, know where our kids are and who their friends are. The kids that are running the streets are those whose parents don't care where their kids are or what they are doing.

LJ, slow down....time for a reality check. Harford County's crime rate is far lower than most parts of the state. However, Edgewood does have a disproportionally high amount of crime for any area of this size. Yes, a lot of Edgewood's crimes include gang related crimes, such as a few shootings & murders, armed narcotics trafficking, commercial robberies, and petty stuff too. Bel Air, HdG, and Aberdeen all have headaches, but not on the same scale. BA is not paradise, but appears to be when compared to Edgewood.
Most of the criticism of Edgewood on these forums is closer to the truth than folks want to believe. Sorry. Edgewood does have a significant gang problem, even without the media hype. While Edgewood has very nice areas, they are small pockets. Who wants to spend $350k - $500k for a home when you may be sending your kids to Edgewood HS, or living a few blocks away from public housing/section 8 bliss? That same expenditure can put you in a safer neighborhood with better public schools just about anywhere in Harford County. I'm sure you are a great parent, but have you ever asked your kids if they want to attend E wood HS? Have you ever visited the school to check it out for yourself? I hope your stepkids are street smart and tough. My heart goes out to the good folks such as you who live there and are frustrated with the status quo.

Well, now we have two homicides in HdG to look at. 2 in Edgewood as well. 2/4 of them drug-related.

I would suggest to anyone moving to Harford County to avoid Edgewood, Aberdeen, Havre de Grace and Abingdon. Basically, avoid any area south of Bel Air and look north. I would recommend sticking to North Bel Air, Fallston, Forest Hill, Jarrettsville.

x2
I lived in North Bel Air a few years back when I took a job in Baltimore. We looked long and hard before deciding on Bel Air. Coming from NYC I never thought it would be so hard to find an area in MD where we felt safe, but it was. Any of the towns CG mentioned are great. The closer you get to 95, the dicer the proposition.

You can pretty much anywhere you'd want to go in harford County in about 15 minutes tops. Morning rush hour to Baltimore County is harsh though, so beware if you have jobs there.
Look for Belcamp/Riverside and I think you'll find something that suits you.

I had a house in Bel Air that I purchased in 2003 and I kick myself for selling it and moving. The town is amazing and a perfect place to raise a family. The schools are great and the people of Bel Air are awesome. I hope to move back someday, God willing, and I strongly recommend Bel Air to anyone who wants to live in Harford Co.
