Default Lewisdale? (PG County) Safe?

I am moving from Pittsburgh down to PG county area to work at U of Md. My parents have an old friend who is about to put her house up for sale in Lewisdale and I could get first dibs on it if I chose to move there. My parents haven't been there in about 20 years.

What can you tell me about Lewisdale? Is it safe? Family friendly?

Lewisdale is off of University Blvd. The main road through the area is 23rd Avenue. That area is really changed since I was a kid. The orginal Ledo's Pizza is still there though. I'm not sure how the areas tucked away in Lewisdale are, but being around the shopping areas you can see how very diverse it is. There is a large hispanic population but there are also long-time residents that must feel safe enough to stay. My son's ex-girlfriend lives in that area and I never really heard her family ever mentions any major problems. I guess the best thing to do is look up crime statistics. The surrounding area is basically Adelphi. Lewisdale is more of a sub-division.

I grew up in Lewisdale and the area has changed drastically. Gone is the quiet neighborhood where you could walk down the block at any given hour or through the park and actually feel safe.

While I still like the neighborhood and still have family there. I wouldn't commit to purchasing a home there and there are quite a few homes up for sale there. I have to question why so many homes are going up for sale in the neighborhood.

Check the crime stats before committing to the purchase.

Thanks everyone.

I was finally able to talk to my parents friend and asked her why she was moving. She said she just needs less house now but that the neighborhood has indeed gone downhill since she lived there. She said that most crime is petty but that it is there. her biggest complaint was that people who moved in the last 10 years aren't taking as good of care of their properties and her old neighbors used to and it's bringing the look of her street down.
