Default Living In Beltsville???

Can anyone pls let me know how the area of Beltsville is for living in terms of safety?
Also some ppl say Hyatsville is a good place to live while others hold a different view. Opinions????
I would be studying at UMD CP and will have my dept near Route 1.
I have option of renting in silver spring but its too far and means 2 bus rides to get to Univ. Am confused
What about College Park itself? Is that area good?

1. Hyattesville- weird city. Lot of immigrants live here (mexico, central america, africa, carribean) Parts of it pretty nice, other parts are sketchy.

2. Beltsville-blue collar. Lots of junkyards, warehouses, tool and die operations. Mostly white/latins americans here...middle class. Its okay area and you won't have any problems for the most part. Plus its not that far from UM

3. College Park-its a decent area......

Beltsville is like any place else -- it depends...there are some very nice areas --$600,000 plus homes-- and some unattractive areas. I've live here for about 50 years and I don't feel unsafe. You must use common sense.

My best friend (female, 24) lives alone in an apartment in Hyattsville and she claims it's as safe as can be and she knows a lady down her street that feels so safe that she leaves her front door unlocked. My personal opinion however is that Hyattsville itself is not that bad to live on terms of safety but some areas are exponentially safer than others.

The closer you live to campus, the more expensive rent is going to be. Especially in College Park itself. There is a major housing crisis on campus because of the lack of on-campus housing so rent right around campus is very high, hard to find and mostly all college students. Crime is higher than other college cities so it's not safe to be walking around 12-6 alone. But for Route One if you walk 20 seconds off campus you'll find 4 bars so be aware the closer you live to campus the louder it (drunk yelling, partying, etc) is as well.

There is metro or UM Shuttle that goes to a lot of places, so check out their bus routes at transportation.umd.edu.

i find this link to be very helpful
Prince George's County Beltsville Demographics - Neighborhood Demographics
it looks like beltsville is pretty high in crime and hyattsville - the first zip code is your best bet, the others are higher than average as well. if you find a particular neighborhood you like, you can dig further on this website.

Those numbers don't sound right to me. I lived in Beltsville for 6 years, and it was fine.

Default Thankyou...Mt Rainier anyone?

Thankyou all for replying. Really helpful. The post abt the noise level being high around the Campus area makes me feel a bit better since i cant get housing there anyways I agree that the rents around the college park area are higher and also the safer areas of greenbelt dont offer independent units in my price range. Im opting for a place in Mt Rainier which isnt close to the university but still is more affordable for me. The lady there says its safe. Any ppl frm Mt Rainier? I guess its not the best neighboorhood to be in but might work out.
