Ocean City is just for walking/Boardwalk and visitng but not for the beach. I was there in the summer and I did not see any one swimmimg. Swimmimg is different then getting your feet wet.
If you have ever been to a real beach you would never enjoy Ocean city water. It is filthy. The water comes off as polluted. The sand have broken glass, rocks. If you do decide to walk barefeet in the sand just watch your step.

I have been going to OC/Fenwick for over 30 years. Every summer I have always seen hundreds of people in the water...swimming..not just getting their feet wet. The water is fine.

Maybe you are going to Ocean City , New Jersey or something, or your afraid to go into water that you can't see through it or something? Maybe you can provide a water quality report that supports your accusations of Ocean City having dirty beaches and dirty water. You won't be able to because its just not true.
Some (like this poster) shouldn't comment on something you don't know what your talking about.
What do you consider a REAL BEACH ????? Anyway lscalder?

I'm not afraid of water.
I live in NE Ohio, and if anyone knows anything about Edgewater or parts of the Cuyahoga, then you would know that it can get pretty grimy.
I've been to beaches on the West Coast (N & S), been to Florida, and to Va Beach.....I'm sure I can handle Ocean City. Im also sure that its probably not unsafe or crazy dirty, given that so many people like go there all the time and return often.
lscalder is allowed to have his/her opinion about the water. However, if the water is so horrendous, then I doubt anyone would even wade in it, as he/she stated. Actually, come to think of it, when I went to Virginia Beach for a week and stayed oceanfront - I couldnt see the anything through the water. Where in that vicinity of the Atlantic is there coral and schools of fish so close to the mainland/beaches??? We went out pretty far (swimming) - no views of baby fish/coral/see through-water.
I promise that when I come back I will reply to this post with my official take on it, which Im sure will be pleasant.
It's all good

Ocean city is ok, but I prefer Assateague Island(national seashore)--especially during the busy time. It's only about 10 minutes away from Ocean City, but is alot quieter--fewer people. I don't feel like I'm sitting on top of other people. They have a little picnic area, small shop that you can hotdogs, ice cream from and a bath house. Then when we're done swimming we usually head off to the Ocean City Boardwalk for awhile. Of course, there's also the wild ponies.
When my kids were little they used to love visiting Frontier Town--the wild west town with pool, miniature golf, wild west shoot-outs. That's very close to OC and Assateague. All-in-all a good time.
But if we're going to vote favorite beach on East Coast--mine is for the Outer Banks
Have a great trip!

I guess those who thinks Ocean City looks anything like a real beach have never traveled to other countries or seen a real beach before. A real beach water
How can people swim in a dark/filthy water and not able to see what is in the water and thinks oh it is 100% safe. You have no idea if a jellyfish is right behind you. You can not see nothing in the water, The water is suppost to be light blue but instead the water is mid night dark during the day.
I have never heard anyone bragging about how beautiful Ocean City beach. I have never heard anyone say the water is so blue and clear and clear. When you go to a real beach the water is suppost to be blue/clear/clean.

Right.
I guess the entire world isn't as perfect as the beaches you visit.

The term "Real Beach" just kills me. You haven't been up and down the East Coast much have you???????????? Virginia Beach is a nice beach and the water is just like OC...and has the same clarity of water. Its not filthy, the visibility is not but a few feet is all. Just because you can't see through the water doesn't mean it isn't safe, its just a fear you must have. I'd say that your probably not alone either. But all I'm saying is that it doesn't mean its dirty, filthy or unsafe and its irresponsible to say so in my opinion.
The Outer Banks of North Carolina has some of the most pristine beaches on the East coast. The water visibility is the same as OC's.
If you did go offshore in a boat fishing or diving the water is quite blue off of all these beaches. The gulf stream is also between 75 and 100 miles off shore which also has alot to do with the difference of beach in the North like Ocean City , Maryland and Beaches in South Florida (the Tropics !!!!) and the Gulf Stream is only a short distance off shore...some places less than a mile.
The Beach Coast line in the North anywhere is not CLEAR....only in the Tropics, the Caribbean , South Pacific...etc , etc.
