Default camping in western maryland

I usually camp in western maryland at "Savage river State Forrest". Also "Popular Lick ORV Trail"---Need 4x4 truck, absolutely no cars.

New Germany State Park is the park headquarters in western maryland which has all the camping information, lake for fishing, showers, cabins for rent, camp sites, mountain bike trails in the summer, cross country ski trails in the winter. "Big Run State Park" has mor camping.

I've driven into Assateague/Chincotink for camping several times. I can't remember which - but one is a national park and has horrible facilities and the other is a state park and had good facilities. But I can't remember which is which. We've always pulled our car right up to our campsite and it is AMAZING. But, I also wouldn't go there when it is hot because there is NO shade.

Just returned from a night at Greenbrier State Park and it was great. We had site D-19 which was close to bathouse, water pump and camp hosts. Camp sites had pea gravel surface, fire pit, picnic table, and TWO secure posts for hanging stuff. We had several little kids so that was nice for us. Really nice lake for swimming, boating, etc.

My friend had a book that was something to the effect of "Best Tent Camping in Maryland" and it gave insider tips on best sites, etc.

I have camped at Deep Creek Lake in the fall, and it was great- lots to do, great weather, good campsites.

I also recommend Point Lookout State Park, in Southern Maryland on the Western Shore. Lots of water and history, not as buggy as Assateague- I have never camped on the island, but just rode my bike there once and the bugs were AWFUL.

Do any of you Assateague campers have recommendations for when to go to avoid the bugs?
