Question New job in Frederick, MD

Hi all,

I am getting ready to move from Germany (working for the Army) to Frederick. Actually, I am trying to figure out where to move. I will be bringing my wife and two young children. I am looking for a place that's kid friendly (i.e. good schools, playgrounds, safe) and is under $225K. Anyone have a good idea for a location? I have been lurking at other suggestions and will research them as time allows.

Thanks,
Brian

Short answer...stay north of Frederick. If you go south you will be in DC-suburb zone and homes under $225K are impossible to find. I'd recommend checking out Boonsboro and some parts of Hagerstown in Washington County (Hagerstown can be rough - feel free to ask about different areas of the city). In Frederick County, if you can push your housing costs up by maybe $30K, try Brunswick or Point of Rocks (mo expensive because they are near the water and MARC public transit). If you absolutely must stay under $225K, try Thurmont or Emmitsburg. Both nice, quiet areas that are very safe but not really havens for higher education. Carroll and Howard County schools are better but homes under $225K are virtually nonexistent.

Good luck!

PKOONS is right about DC prices, go north, west or even east into northern Carroll County (Hampstead-Manchester) and drive cross-county in the morning, might work for you. If you are near retirement age and plan to stay in that area, check out PA, as PA doesn't tax most pensions. A lot of Army guys who worked at Fts. Dietrick or Ritchie retired in the area of Blue Ridge Summit, PA, just across the line from MD. That old 2-lane Rte 550 from Thurmont up to Ritchie take you through some really lovely areas. Use realtor website to check areas by zip code or town name. Even 20 years ago we had guys commuting from up there to Northern Virginia to work for various Army agencies.
