I grew up in Rockville, Maryland. I know I sound like an old fart, but during the years that I grew up there, it was probably the best place to be in the entire country. Many of our Dad's worked in D.C., and we lived in the suburbs where the Montgomery County School system was considered the best in the United States - got a fantastic, quality education. Alas, this was the 60's and 70's. By the 1980's, I didn't even recognize the place where I was raised! Unbridled growth, horrible traffic, all once open spaces covered with thousands of cookie-cutter townhouses. Lots of jobs though, and of course close proximinity to Washington, D.C. I don't know how the school system is these days.

I know Howard County is nice, and Columbia is definitely beautiful, and diverse. Columbia is srill considered on of the most successful planned communities of it's kind. Friends of ours bought a 1970's home there and remodeled it, and it is awesome!

Moved to Anne Arundel County, Maryland and found it much nicer, more affordable, close to Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay. However, after a time, too much growth beginning to encroach there also. I then left it all behind for a smaller town in North Carolina, and now a small town in Montana. I would never go back to Maryland because I don't like congestion, but maybe some of my input will help you in your decision.

Default Moving to Maryland...

I'll be moving to MD in about a month for a new job in Elkridge, and need to find a good area to live. We'll probably rent an apartment at first, but we'd like to buy a house within a year or so. We have three young children, so a good neighborhood is very important, but I'd also prefer not to have too long of a commute to work. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Prices have gone down a lot- you should have no problem finding a nice townhouse in that price range in Columbia.

We have been looking in Elkridge too. Just a word of warning - there is a newer home subdivision off of route 1, I forget the name of it. It is nice and has high security, but when we went there a few weeks ago, a public housing complex was being built right in front of it. So a lot of the homes there are on sale now and for really cheap.

We saw some nice townhomes, old and new, off Montgomery Rd. A little bit down where Rte 1 splits are some nice house areas but pricey, I think technically that's Hanover.

I personally was liked the nicer parts of Elkridge. But it is an area that you should visit personally because the area can go either way.

Relay/Catonsville/Arbutus are all great neighborhoods to live in. They all have access to public transportation (MARC/MVA buses) that you can take to Baltimore and Bethesda.
Elkridge doesnt have complete access to good transportation. Also, Elkridge is overall boring and not fun to live in (I live there). In addition, Relay/Catonsville/Arbutus all have old bungalows, which is great if you are into old homes.
