Housing near Frederick
We are thinking of moving to MD, working in Frederick. Any suggestions on where to live? Would like to live within 30 miles of Frederick near good grade schools. Could spend 300-350K for a house. Please help!

are you looking for a single family home, TH, or condo? Are you looking for new construction (if so, you are looking at TH and condos in that price range within a 25 mile radius of Frederick - the exception MAYBE being if you are going west towards Boonsboro and Hagerstown (which is 25 mi west of Frederick)).
I used to live in Frederick city limits - if you are more specific I may be able to be of more help to you.

i would recommend Middletown... it's about 15 minutes from downtown Frederick and a beautiful area. Great school system and a calm/quiet area. It's predominately families, surburb neighborhoods, and has some farms on the outskirts.

NV11, the suggestion of Middletown is a good one. They do have good schools. If you want to live closer in, there are neighborhoods within the city boundaries, very nice & walkable, with o.k. schools. We live within the boundaries of N. Frederick Elementary [and have a 3 yr. old] and find it acceptable. You can find decent, older SF homes in these areas for under 300k. We like living closer in because of the proximity to city amenities, but if you prefer the rural areas, Middletown is a great choice.

Middletown is good for older homes but you may be able to get some good new construction deals on TH at HOllow Creek.
Frederick City, in your price range you're looking at older homes but nice locales.
Avoid Rt. 40/Hillcrest. THere is another thread down the chain here about gang issues in Frederick. I agree with the overall suggestion that the gang problem is not very bad nor widespread - primarly because Frederick COunty, unlike Montgomery COunty, did NOT bury their heads in the sand and became very proactive about the fact that yes. . . there are some gang elements here. . . lets deal with it (unlike Mont.Co who couldn't believe that gangs would come to its domain. . .). They are really trying to stay on top of the issue. I used to live off Rosemont in the city limits and anytime there was ANYTHING remotely gang related - like a drop of graffiti - the police were on it ASAP.

From my past experience living in both Frederick and Hagerstown, I would recommend hagerstown for a slower and more peaceful kind of family lifestyle. Furthermore, you get more bang for your bucks in Hagerstown, and houses are generally built with space to breath in between neighbors.
I would try searching the area off Robinwood Drive. There are a couple of nice communities that I highly recommend as they are also in the top school district.
Good luck.

Fredneck
Does anyone remember when Frederick was rural? Sigh. I miss that. I think it's overcrowded now, but I bet there's a lot of housing there in your price range. You will like it, I think. If you like hiking, you can visit the Monocacy battlefield. It's historic and they have a nice trail. I think there are a couple of farms for your family to visit in the summer, too. I also ADORE the historic district. They have some truly excellent restaurants there. Some are pricey, but I was impressed. I worked there for while a few years ago and I had some very nice meals.
