Yet another Gaithersburg question...
Hello all...I know that this is a similar question to a lot of others, but I have to ask it becasue I am not sure that there has ever been a really difinitive answer to this but:
Where are the good and bad areas of Gaithersburg?
I live in Rockville currently, but am looking to move, and Gaithersburg has some decent house listings...but the "margin for error" on where the nice areas of the city are is very slim.
If you drive down the areas off midcounty Highway, like Emory Grove, they look pretty nice...but then you hear "Stay away from the areas near the Mall."
I have also heard, west of 270 is great, but not East, until well past 355.
Basically, does anyone have any idea?
Thanks

Stay away from Deer Park, areas near Gaithersburg high school and anywhere near West Side Drive. Stay closer to Darnestown Rd., Great Seneca and Quince Orchard.

The nicest parts of Gaithersburg are west of 270, in the 20878 also known as North Potomac or Darnestown. However; not all areas east of 270 are bad-it just tends to vary by neighborhood.
Lakeforest mall and the surrounding areas are not the best and a lot of crime has occured around the transit center. Olde Towne Gaithersburg also is not the best either.
Montgomery Village is hit or miss. Usually the areas around Cider Mill and some of the condominums have a bad reputations. Other sections, particularly in the East Village are a good place to reside. Also the areas around Laytonsville have a good reputation as well.
What kind of place are you looking for? Generally the neighborhoods with single family homes are nicer than ones with just condos and townhomes.

We are currenty looking at a place that is not far from the Goshen/Emory Grove intersection. Driving through, it looks like a very nice place...but I know that looks can be deceiving.

I lived in Montgomery Village 5 years ago and moved out after 1 year. I now live in Baltimore and it's much better than Montgomery Village.

My husband is from Mont Village and would never live there now...crime and gangs are way up. If you have kids, I wouldn't live in East Village b/c the high school is Gaithersburg, which is terrible. My husband's parents wouldn't send him there 20 years ago and it's MUCH worse now. Other parts of MV go to Watkins Mill HS, which is not good either. Stay toward Darnestown and good luck.
