I grew up in Annapolis and have tender feelings towards it, but the sad fact is that there is alot of public housing and it's getting rougher. There was a shoot out between 2 local teenagers and a police officer at the mall food court a few months ago - I'm talking about a mall with a Williams-Sonoma and Coach. It's one of those weird segregated places. You do have amazing expensive homes but half a mile away you have projects. THe public schools aren't good for the most part. The privates ones are good but expensive. Cape st. Claire is nice, as are parts of Edgewater. Edgewater has no housing projects just alot of old blue collar people and kids in low-rider pickups, but I think it's getting nicer as we speak. People who don't want to live in Annapolis are making it nice. They're building it up and I have a feeling the value is going to skyrocket within a few years.

1. I have two elementery age kids- want a top rated public elem school (I am not concerned w/ middle school, as we won't be there that long).

The public schools have been very troubled in Annapolis for years especially at the middle and high school level. As far as elementary goes, there are some bad schools but there are some exceptions. West Annapolis Elementary School is a Blue Ribbon School for example.

2. I prefer an area that is "walkable" to many of the following: shopping, restaurants, library, school, parks.

You would have to live practically right downtown. This raises two big questions. Housing prices are very high in Maryland, and Downtown Naptown is no exception. If you live downtown the public elem. schools are not very good.

3. Although I am not completely opposed to new construction, I prefer the charm of older homes.

Once again, older homes in Annapolis = very expensive.

4. We want to spend about 800k for a min of 3 br. home.

Might be a problem for Downtown, but some areas in the lovely West Annapolis and near the mall at Rolling Knolls you will have no problem.
Thank you for your help!!!
I hope your search goes well!

Default Are there any nice affordable areas close to the water?

Are there any nice affordable areas close to the water/ city in Maryland? They do not have to be right on the water. I was hoping that there might be something on the east coast, as there is nothing afforable on the west coast? I have no children at home, but still would like a nice place to live.
Thanks, Jill55
