Default Retiring to near Cedarville State Forest?

We're getting closer to retirement but are having trouble deciding whether we are country mice or city mice. Actually living in a large metropolitan area concerns us, but so does living in the middle of nowhere.

It seems like the area near Waldorf may be one answer. The housing costs appear reasonable. We would be looking for a smaller two-bedroom house on at least 3-5 acres for around $300,000. Ideally we'd love to back up to Cedarville State Forest.

Plus we'd be less than an hour from Washington, DC and all the museums, etc. (Won't have to fight the rush hour traffic.) Moreover, I'm a huge history buff and I can't think of an area more crammed full of interesting destinations, all free!

Am I on the right track? Thanks for any opinions or suggestions.

No -- just beginning our search for a new area to retire. Those are just general parameters. A small house on 1 acre would probably be fine, especially if it backs up to a park. $350,000 is probably maximum, however.

Looking for a little of a rural feel but within an hour of DC.

The homes I know of with 1 or more acre are more then that but that is just on the Charles county side,Brandywine might be different.
