scenic byways around DC
Hi,
I live in Gaithersburg and like to drive every weekend for something that is scenic. For me plain countryside is scenic as well, mountains are better though. So far, I have done only two so-called scenic byways 1) Catoctin mountain HWY and 2) George Washington Memorial PKWY. I plan to do Skyline Dr and Blue Rige PKWY in October. Can you suggest me more. I live in Gaithersburg and can travel 300 miles or so (back to Gaithersburg). Thanks a lot.

I cannot recall the road, but is prominent enough on the map. From Fredrick to Gettysburg is ok, but Gettysburg to Carlisle is very scenic. There is one stretch of rolling hills that passes through small towns and orchards- reminds me alot of France. Carlislie is a nice destination to have lunch.
Doint Skyline in the Fall is fantastic, but prepare for crowds.

Historic National Rd. 40 from Hagerstown to Frederick was surprising and delightful.

thanks a lot. Yes I am ready for the crowd. My plan is to stay in Front Royal and do the skyline so that i don't have to rush back or something. I was looking at map and had realized that going to Carlisle should be great. I even made it sort of road by road. I am glad you confirmed it that it is going to be great. I will look for Historic National road too. Thanks.

Heading west on Rt. 40 from Hagerstown gives you a much nicer perspective than I-70. Just before Hancock you will be forced back on to I-70. If you keep heading west, merge onto I-68. This interstate gives you a great scenic trip through Western Maryland. You can drive Scenic 40 or MD 144 as it is sometimes labeled if you want a more leasurly drive. MD 144 takes you through the back country, but there are less views as you normally are in deep forest.
