MD has a relatively small population, around 6 million, and two very high crime areas in Prince Georges County and Baltimore City. Baltimore will consistently average one murder per day with Prince Georges not far behind. Along with that, both those areas have high property crime rates/other violent crime rates. Some other areas of MD also have higher than national average property crime rates. Calvert County where I live has a crime rate, as does Charles County, that reflects the proximity to Washington and PG County in reagrds to crimes such as shoplifting and robbery, the majority arrested for those crimes here are non-residents. Recreational drug use in MD seems to be higher than nationally.

My boyfriend is a firefighter in Baltimore city. I would say they get an average of 5 shooting calls a day. I've seen 2 or 3 just when I've been there for an hour or so.

I live in Baltimore County (Perry Hall) and in the last three years I've seen a gang shooting (directly across from my house), cars stolen, houses broken into, and kidnapping. All within blocks of my house.

I travel to NYC alot and feel 1000 times safer anywhere there than in parts of Baltimore. I actually feel safer in Canton downtown, than my own neighborhood in the county. Sad.

Yeah, carey24, that's a lot and really sad. I've been in crime-ridden Prince Georges most of my life. I've seen a lot and been a victim myself but I can't say that! Most times I feel very safe.
