Hi everyone...
I am planning on coming down to the Columbia/Baltimore area for a visit this coming weekend. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on things that I should deffinitly check out. I have some places and things already that I want to look at, but any more suggestions would be great. I want to try and get as much done in a day as I can! Thanks in advance.

Hi MLG !
I'm Colleen aka relotomd. Due to crime, Avoid anything close to Baltimore, avoid southern Harford County. Low crime, good air quality, look at the Eastern Shore of MD, near Ocean City... beaches (dogs allowed October thru March), Assateaugue beaches, dogs allowed all year round at South End Assateague. See my posting under the heading "have to move to Harford County" and you will see I am originally from Pgh Pa, relocated to Eastern Shore (Pittsville Maryland), bought a house there, and now had to leave it n move to Harford County.....due to ANOTHER job change for my husband. I am sick about leaving it behind...but perhaps a nice person will come along and buy my 4 month old rancher with . 3 acres, searchable on realtor.com under zip 21850.
Good luck, there are lots of 20somethings in the Oc area., I know cause my daughter and her husband still live there. They have a condo overlooking the ocean. No they are not rich...she is a part time college student/restaurant hostess...he is an assistant golf course superintendent.
Affordable and on the beach...a really great life.
Colleen

I think you've received very good advice from these posts, but I have to express my surprise at teleblazer's post on Feb 14 re the best school systems in the state. That was a very odd list, and I can't imagine it is supported by facts.
I don't have facts at hand either, but I can say by reputation that Montgomery County (DC suburbs) and Howard County (midway between Baltimore and DC) are considered to be two of the top school systems in the entire country. I hope you can find some objective data on this so that you don't have to take the word of any of us strangers on this forum. Both of these areas are very expensive in which to live, which is the downside. Be aware, though, that many of the other areas mentioned in other posts, particularly on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, would be very inconvenient in terms of access to grad schools. Good luck.

Inexpensive apartments and Maryland are like oil and water. An efficiency is the same as my mortgage when I last looked in College Park. Few apartments allow dogs larger than a cat if at all. The crime rate in Maryland, at least with your specifications, is going to be realistic. I hope you have a nest egg you are sitting on because though you are braver than most kids out there, it is tougher to make it than when I was 23, just as it was tougher for me to make it as opposed to my dad. The generations aren't easy on the progression of life, especially the cash point.
If you pick Colombia you are closer to Balmer than DC but you can head down to Annapolis for fun as well.
Have you looked into the VA beach area? That would entail Newport News, Norfolk, Va beach, Hampton, and a lot of other little burbs.

Thank you all for your insight. I have not looked into the VA area at all. I think I am going to stick to the MD area, just because it is closer to family that I have in PA. I will take all of these suggestions into consideration. And Rob M, I have been doing my own research as well as listening to people's suggestions on here. Thanks for the heads up!

Default Move to Maryland

I'd check in Calvert county. The living there is real laid back, schools are very good, and homes are a bit cheaper. Let me know if you need any help, and I'll be glad to send info to you.

Default columbia - meh!

i was employed at the academic laboratory on the fringe of columbia and remember friends telling me about the covenants within the town that affect the color of blinds or curtains you may want to hang in a window. its very much a planned community with near nazi laws when it comes to the apperance of your property and home. your neighbors may not like something you did and you will hear about it in the mail quickly. conformity is the rule. those that lived in baltimore seemed to have less horror tales.

I was confused by that as well. Montgomery and Howard are tops, both locally and nationally.

You are 23, so I am guessing that you would like to be around the more lively part of the area. I would honestly suggest moving to the City (Georgetown and Capital Hill are always great) or moving to College Park, Rockville, Silver Spring, or Bethesda. Crime may be a little higher than other places in Maryland, but that is only because those other places are in the middle of nowhere.
