What it comes down to is how close or far you want to be from the cities, how much you are willing to spend on housing, and what do you want in an area specifically.
I am in love with Howard County because it is about halfway in between Baltimore and DC, which gives you flexibility. It is a safe area, with good public schools, and access to major highways. There are areas with affordable housing, Elkridge, Columbia, Laurel, and areas that are more rural.

Southern Maryland tends to be a more affordable area to reside in Maryland. In addition to having lower home prices and lower taxes, much of the area offers an easy commute to DC and Virginia. Additionally, we have a DOD metropolis located in Lexington Park, in St. Mary's County, which employs TONS of people. Traffic and the hustle-bustle of metropolitan living is at a minimum in Southern Maryland. Check out the schools and employment on-line and I think you might be pleasantly surprised. I am a Philadelphia suburbs transplant into St. Mary's County and I love the area. Our bay, rivers and creeks, alone, make living here an absolute pleasure. If you like sailing, power boating, fishing, etc., Southern Maryland offers all that and more.
Best of luck!

Where in NY state are you moving from? It sounds as though it may be more central or Western than close to NYC ,as some have assumed here.
If you are from those areas, you will find that the housing in MD in general is much, much more expensive than it is in Central areas (Syracuse,Binghamton) or Western (Buffalo,Rochester) of NYS.
IF you are moving from the NYC area or suburbs of, you will probably find similar or lower housing prices, even in today's downward spiral.
I would look in more Western MD for more affordable homes, but it isn't exactly a young couples "hip" area to be, more suburban, rural and not a lot of "nightlife" if that is what you are looking for.
Frederick has a great downtown area but again, the housing in Frederick is expensive, you may want to look at townhomes before considering a single family home.
MD is a beautiful state and we hope that you find what you are looking for!
