That wasn't an option I knew about.
How does that work?

Thanks!

When I moved to MD from OH, I found the DMV ridiculous...separate lines for driver's licenses and registration, plus you have to get there extremely early (at least in Moco) to get a place in line outside, then wait forever outside and inside.

Here's the link to the DMV Maryland Car Registration Guide - Renewals, Changing States, New Vehicle Purchases, Non Operational - DMV.ORG with all their details...they require you to register your car within 60 days. I didn't for at least 8-9 months and just told them I'd recently moved. They didn't ask for proof. Because of that, I only paid $100 taxes on my car. I guess it would be a lot more, but never really understood the details. Hopefully the sight will help. I just remember it was a pain in the butt compared to OH with really unhelpful people.

Also, if you have a car loan, your copy of the title will not be accepted...I had to fill out a form for the "original" title to be sent from my lienholdeer, and when the DMV received it, I had to go back and wait in line all over again! Plus, I bought my car before I was married, so the original had my maiden name. My letter listed both maiden and married names to cover this, but they still argued with me and almost refused to register my car until I asked for a supervisor...even showed them my marriage license and marriage certificate and still gave me a problem!

Good luck with it!

I lived in the Walnut Ridge subdivision of Frederick for 8 years (it neighbors Whittier). It is within the city limits but not "in the city" - though if I could have afforded to live in the CITY city of Frederick, I would have done it in a heartbeat. It is a great place to live. Frederick is a great city with a definite family emphasis. It is quaint and "country" while hip at the same time. Our decision to move was in part to trying to get closer to my husband's work, and I teach in the county immediately to the south of Frederick; when I go back off my childcare leave, I need to be closer than the 30 mile commute one way since I now have 2 children. . . Also, the prices ARE coming more in line with reality though they still have a ways to go.

That is what you will find here, though. The federal govt is the biggest employer in this DC metro area and Frederick is considered a suburb of DC, even though alot of people don't like that designation. My husband is from San Antonio; we could get a mansion there for the price we are paying for our new (actually old construction) home here in Maryland.

I would take Edge's suggestion of renting if you can until you get the lay of the land; I guarantee you within 6 months you'll know where you want to be. If you can get a 6 month lease, you'll be good to go. It sucks to have alot of stuff in storage but it is hard to buy long distance if you are not previously very familiar with an area (and kept up on its changes). We have been living, 4 of us, in a 800 sq ft condo with our entire house from Frederick in storage while we looked and took our time looking in this market. Consider it the price of doing business to find the home that is "the one" for your family.

Good luck to you!

It only works if you haven't "claimed" your vehicles on the annual personal property tax form yet.

If you haven't sent that form in yet, go to the County Assessor's Office and fill out the form with someone there. Make sure to have your vehicle title, WV driver's license and two proofs of residence in WV. Once you report your vehicles with the Assessor, they will then give you an affidavit stating you are a new resident of WV and that you have reported your personal property (your vehicles) in accordance to state law.

When you go to register your vehicle at the DMV, bring the affidavit, proof of insurance and your previous state's title for the vehicle. They will waive the 5% Privledge Tax as long as you provide the affidavit... which is a good chunk of change.

What we did was get our driver's licenses switched over at the DMV first, went over to the Assessor's Office, got the affidavit, and went right back to the DMV to get our tags... it worked pretty well.

Yup, I know, but hey it IS considered a suburb. ANything within a 50-60 mile radius is going to be a suburb/sleeper community/exburb/ whatever the frick you want to call it of DC because so many people live outward and commute inward to DC.

Think LA sprawl on in a much more contained area - all those cities out there are "suburbs" of LA.

By you.

Look, the word "suburb" is very subjective, and means different things to different people. If you're looking for actual definitions and a very lively discussion on this topic, go here http://www.city-data.com/forum/gener...suburbs-5.html and read up.

Is there really such thing as a dangerous suburb of Frederick???? How many areas are even that bad in Frederick city? Like one or two are 'considered' dangerous but really aren't very much so at all

You know, you're absolutely right. I was born and raised in MoCo Maryland and over the past 35+ years I have seen the changes to Frederick and believe me, they are mighty (yet mostly good as far from a livability viewpoint - if that is even a word). And those changes are primarily if not entirely due to people moving farther and farther outward from the metro DC area that work in the metro DC area but who wanted more affordable housing along with a decent place to live.

Town or unincorporated developed area close to a city. Suburbs, since they are largely residential, are usually dependent on a city for employment and support services and are generally characterized by low-density development relative to the city. However, considerable industrial development has occurred in many suburbs so that their dependency on a city has been reduced.

I know there are a million definitions but just wanted to put in my 2 cents. ANd that's it - I understand where you're coming from too. I can't believe there is an entire section devoting to debating this topic?? Who has time to be typing messages all day long???
