What are the safest Suburbs around Frederick?
I am a southern girl, so I don't know anything about Maryland. My husband is getting a job transfer to Frederick. I am a stay at home mom and we have two children. We currently live in a safe upper-scale neighborhood in Texas (frisco).
I was wondering what are the safest and nicer parts in Maryland around Frederick? We want to live in a nice suburb. We do not want to live in the "city". So please please help me! I am so anxious because I just don't know anything about Maryland or Frederick. We want great schools, very very low crime, safe neighborhoods, ect.
Also the homes seem so expensive in Maryland compared to Texas. So please if anyone is willing to help me I would really appriciate it!!!

There's lots of nice areas in every direction around Frederick. Depending how far your husband wants to commute each way, you can have a great number of areas to check out and narrow down.
When we lived in MD, we lived about 20 minutes north of Frederick in the Taneytown area. We'd love to move back there again. But, you're right, the home prices are not only expensive as the area is commutable to Wash DC, but it seems the area is growing and supporting local commerce, so the houses are going up in price accordingly.
Some towns to check our are: Mount Airy, Walkersville, Thurmont, Urbanna, Taneytown, Boonesboro, Mount Aetna, Union Bridge, Woodsboro, etc. I would even look at the Hagerstown (Washington County) area and drive over the "mountain" to get to Frederick everyday.
Good luck!

I agree with Stripes. I live just outside Taneytown and it's pretty safe; typical small town, imo. Also, you could check out areas around Emmittsburg too. Good luck.

One thing to consider, Frederick is not a "big city" in any regards. It has a really smart downtown with a cool restaurant/shopping district. Yeah, there are some unsavory places around, but overall, it's pretty nice.
You can go just about every direction and find very rural areas to live in that are nice. You may even consider moving to West Virginia. Charles Town and Harpers Ferry, WV are only 40 minutes from Frederick and vehicle inspection, from what I understand, is the same (and share reciprocity) as New York state. You can also have the vehicle "privilege" tax required for registration waived if a new resident.

I have to agree with Stripes--Woodsboro is great my husband's family is from that area and it is beautiful, Taneytown is also a great place but I would not move in the "town" of Taneytown but in the rural sections it is also beautiful. Adjacent to Taneytown a little further east is Silver Run which is where I moved from. Extremely rural and very safe. I never looked my cars walked outside with extreme comfort, except for the deer that sometimes spook me but they don't bother you. The northern most part of Carroll COunty is very close to Frederick but yet very rural and safe with low crime. Also prices of houses are a little more manageable in that area. Good luck with your move.

I have to 2nd this comment. There are many areas within the city limits where the living is almost Norman Rockwell-like, with safe neighborhoods and friendly neighbors. The only thing is you'd have to accept older housing stock, but IMO that's part of the charm.
If you are sure you don't want to be in the city, I personally would head up towards Thurmont, or perhaps out to Myersville or Middletown.

What areas would you think would have more newer construction around Frederick? We are not necessarily looking for a cookie cutter development but would like an area that is well groomed =with well kept homes and grounds. Any school systems in the area stand out as one of the better ones? We were looking around Carroll County but very expensive for newer construction unless I agree to a .17 lot.

If you are thinking of being near Frederick, but not in the city, there is a newer delevopment called Spring Ridge off of I-70. It has a Frederick mailing address but I don't think it's within the city limits. It is a huge development, with a mix of condos, townhomes, and small and large single family homes. You may consider it cookie-cutter, but here is their website. Welcome to Spring Ridge Online There is a shopping center at the top of the neighborhood with grocery, gas, etc, and a good daycare (don't remember the name) according to my old coworkers who send their kids there.

Agreed the expense is bananas, but that's the East Coast. We are buying a house half the size for double the price of what my brother and his GF got a place for in Austin.
Now is the time to buy, though, as prices crash back down to reality.
We are breaking our lease to buy a house here in Frederick. The current neighborhood is positively Mayberry (same as Rankin's area, we're neighbors) and I know of about five houses for sale in the area.
I grew up in Texas, and in some ways, it's actually nicer here. Don't worry, you'll be fine.
You will find quality folks here who know what it's like to be "new in town" and happy to help you out.
