Severna Park for Interracial Couples??
We are considering a move to Severna Park/Annapolis area, but since I am largely unfamiliar with that area, we are going in blind, somewhat. Any feedback on how interracial-friendly the area is?? How are the schools on diversity??-I have two small children. Are parks and "kid areas" generally friendly? Which communities have more of a neighborly feel than others?! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated:-) Thanks!

There are probably more interracial couples (black & white) in Bowie, Maryland (PG County), but your kids will suffer because the schools are poor compared to Severna Park.
I would avoid the downtown Annapolis area because the schools are bad also.

Thank you! I have heard that about Bowie as well, but that area is sooo not on our list. We want the AA area specifically for the good schools:-) I appreciate your feedback!

MamaVanTwee,
IMO...go where the schools are good/great for the kids, Maryland is very diverse and bi-racial worries IMO are of the past here. I agree that I would stay away from PG at all cost. That AA schools would be better and I don't know about how Severna Park is but around Annapolis you might want to check out the town of Arnold. Good luck ..bunky

You shouldn't have any problems being an interracial couple in Severna Park (I am from there and it is a very nice, well educated population). Though there is little diversity in the schools in the immediate area.
Doing a google search, this is a breakdown of demographics: Severna Park MD (Maryland) ZIP codes, schools, jobs, demographics & more

Severna Park is a bit more progressive, but maybe not as much so in nearby Glen Burnie and Pasadena.
I had a coworker who mentioned he saw members of the KKK actively passing flyers in that area.
For the most part though, Severna Park is almost 92% white and Arnold is about 90% white .
There's just not as much diversity in that county as with others such as Mont and FFX.

There's a bit more diversity in Severn, MD though, but the area is not as upscale and I can't vouch for the schools.

We are in PG now, and that is the reason for the move. Our neighborhood is nice (never had any problems...mostly older people), but the schools are a dealbreaker, as well as the lack of "stuff" around here. The Harbor is nice, but expensive and seems to be geared mostly toward hotel guests. Sadly. Our interracial status is not an issue for us...we are not seeking anyones approval...just want my children to be in a progressive, forward thinking area where it wouldn't be an issue for them either:-) I appreciate your feedback, thank you!

We did a drive-through of the area, and really liked it, but as with alot of neighborhoods around DC, there were not many people out and about, so it was hard to tell. As mentioned to the previous poster, we are not worried about our status (that is our business), but want our kids to feel at home, and have other little kids to play with whose parents won't blink either, you know!

Ish...in this day and age, huh?! Scary. We have Bethesda as our other choice, but like the fact that you get more house for your money out in the SP area, as well as the fabulous schools. I lived in Bethesda before, and love it, but buying is a whole new ballgame out there. FFX County is lovely as well, but just not for me. I am more of a MD girl:-)
Thanks for the heads up on Pasadena & Glen Burnie, BTW. I appreciate you taking the time to write!

If you decide to go with Bethesda, it'll be the best decision you'll ever make.
Severna Park schools are good, but nowhere as good as those in Bethesda.
Plus, Bethesda is a walkable community, has tons of parks, and the shopping can't be beat in MD.
In Severna Park, the only game in town is really the expanded Annapolis Mall and soon to be Parole Center which will be a traffic nightmare.
