Question Annapolis... city living with kids?

Hello everyone,
My husband and I are looking into moving to the Annapolis area. We have two children (8 and 2) and obviously need to be somewhere with EXCELLENT schools. (I'm in higher ed and am VERY picky about education. Schools could be public or private, but $25K each is out of the question.) Heard a lot about Arnold and Broadneck, but these look like they're out in the 'burbs. Hubby and I are hoping to live in more of a city location. We love the idea of walking to parks, school, stores, etc. We recently stayed in Eastport for the weekend and loved the charm and location. But one look at their school ratings had me quite disappointed. So here's my question: is there an area of Annapolis where you can live in an in-town location and walk to amenities and still send your children safely to school?? Does anyone out there live in-town with children?

Do you have a housing budget (to buy or rent per month)? Can vary greatly in Annapolis.

This is a huge transition for us, so we're not really sure what we'll be making. We're thinking our budget (rent or mortgage) will be around $2500-$3000/mo. We may be pleasantly surprised and get great offers, but with the economy (cue foreboding music here) we just aren't sure.

Eastport is a rought area for the most part. There is a very small part of it that is actually "nice" which must be the part you experienced. There are no "excellent" schools in Annapolis so you're going to have to venture further out to like you said, Arnold or Severna Park. Anytime you have a "city" you're not going to have decent schools anymore. Your budget for either renting or owning is "do-able" in Eastport but again, it's NOT a nice area overall.

If you actually want to live within walking distance to downtown, your public school options will show low performing schools. In West Annapolis there is a good neighborhood with a good public school, however West Annapolis is just a bit too far to get downtown without a car....but that would be your best Annapolis public school. Downtown private school is St Mary's, and Key School is a bit further out in the outskirts of Annapolis. Key is pricey.
Yes Broadneck is the burbs.

Check out Davidsonville. Friends of ours with two kids reside there and never stop raving about the place and schools.
