Nice yet Affordable Areas Near Rockville, MD
My husband, 10 year old son and I are new to the Maryland area. We currently reside in Hagerstown, MD. I work in the Rockville area and my husband has recently been transferred to Reston, VA. We are looking for areas near and around Rockville. Can anyone provide input as to what areas are best to live in? Please keep in mind we are also looking for a place that is affordable to live (we will be renting for a while) and has good schools.

What are you hoping to spend on rent? Would you rather have a single family home or a townhouse/apartment. there is quite a bit available in the Rockville, Kensington area.

We are looking to spend approx. $1600 for rent monthly. We are currently looking at all of our options (singlr family/apartments/townhomes) but due to the economy, we are fearful of renting from regular people and would rather rent an apartment/townhome (3BR) from a management company. Any input?

My husband used to work for AvalonBay Communities and I think some of their properties are very nice. Ones in your areas may be Traville, Fields, and Decoverly. I would stay away from Knoll, which is in Germantown and not a safe area. Here is their website to check it out... DC Region Apartments - Avalon Communities
Hope this helps!

Try the 20878 zip in Gaithersburg, 20850, 20851 & 20852 zip in Rockville.
A good recommendation would be Yale Village in Rockville.
Here's the link: Yale Village in Rockville, Maryland, - Montgomery County, MD - Apartment Showcase
Although, if your husband will be working in Reston, VA why not try around Fairfax County? The commute from Rockville to Herndon would be rough on 270 Southbound.

Hi,
We rent a SFH in Kensington and the neighborhood is very nice and has a safe feel to it which you can't always say about other some other places these days. BTW we pay $1695 but there are plenty I've seen in the range from $1300 to $2500 and higher. Depends on what you want out of a house.
There are plenty of rentals around and are offered by Management companies. The schools are also very good around here as well.
The Location of Kensington will put your husband close to the beltway from either Conn Ave or Georgia Ave exits so he can head to Reston. Depending on where in Kensington you find a home Rockville is also a very short drive for your commute as well.
