Need Help Figuring Out Where To Live in MD Near Forests and Water
I recently moved from Washington State, and am living on Kent Island. I am hoping to buy a house somewhere closer to forests (and some hills) -- I have two big dogs who like to run and mountain bike with me on forest trails, and want to live close to those. I am hoping to find somewhere close to a water body, also, because I have a rowing shell I would like to take out when weather permits. AND, to top it all off, I am working in DC and am hoping to have a less time-consuming commute than the Kent Island-DC commute I have now.
I am looking to live somewhere quiet, where there is space around people's houses . . . but not too far from civilization -- and I don't have a ton of money to spend on a house (looking in the $400,00 - $500,000) range if I can.
Any ideas would be appreciated!!!

Mountains, or what passes for them considering where you're from, would be western MD, which can be pretty isolated. Hagerstown going west. Maybe Thurmont. Commute from either will be as long or longer than you have now but no Bay Bridge, traffic worse maybe. Live by the Chesapeake for a year, it may just grow on you, but get off of Kent Island.

Try areas in Frederick or Carroll counties. Prices have dropped enough that you should have no trouble in finding a nice piece of property. Rolling country sides and good commuting to DC. Several of my favorite areas are Mt Airy, New Market, Sykesville, and Jefferson. Good luck

Point of Rocks or Brunswick, MD, or Harper's Ferry, WV. Hiking trails & mtns [near AT], it's on the Potomac River, and there's the MARC train to DC.

I second Mr. Rankin. Southern Frederick County, MD would provide easy access to the Potomac and hiking in the Catoctins. Your price range fits the area too.

If you can find a place by the C&O in Brunswick, that would keep you all happy. Meanwhile, we are breaking our lease on a small house with a big yard less than 30 mins from the C&O and lots of state parks, so PM me if you want more info.
We have really enjoyed the easy access to hiking here, and haven't even cracked the AT yet!

I agree with the other posts about Brunswick area. The prices for housing are very good right now with alot of inventory. With the MARC train right in town you can get to DC in about an hour (easy commute on train) and have great access to hiking, and water. If want information on housing PM me and I can can you some options.
