Unhappy What should I do with a loud neighbor?

Hello~ I am here to seek an answer to the problem that I have been enduring for about three months. First I moved in, it was really quiet and peaceful ( i guess they were out on the vacation) but all of sudden there was extremely loud noise came out of nowhere (booming and banging). Day and night, things were out of control, so I decided to come down to them and ask them to turn down the volume a little bit so I can actually sit down on the chair and start studying for my upcoming GRE. But they never came out and things got worsened. Oooohhh-kay.. SO I ended up going out to shopping and just roaming around the town until they fell asleep.. just hoping you know... Why am I paying about 1500/month and I cannot even get to sleep or even to concentrate on something for a minute. I went to the leasing office and file a complaint, no answer.. so I wrote an official complaint letter as they requested. still no answer.. (as a matte of fact, nothing has been changed) I ended up calling a police officer. (the lasting I want to do to solve this stupid issue) I went down and told them to lower the volume... of course, they did for that moment but next day, they started it again and again and again... I am so stressed out.. still wondering why am i paying 1500 a month in a place where i cannot get a good night sleep? Is there any way I can do to bring an end to this craziness? Help me out !!

Go to Target and buy some earplugs to save your sanity while you are trying to resolve the situation. Some people are just rude, and do not care about how they affect the people around them. Either they have to move, or you will have to move. Calling the police is just a temporary fix and it will just aggravate the situation. I think it is just a part of apartment living. I own a townhouse and still use earplugs to sleep at night on occasion. I know it sucks, but yeah..... earplugs!

Check the noise ordanances in your area, when I lived in District Heights, noise could be a certain decible during 9am-9:00 pm in summer, and like 9:00- 6:00 pm in the winter, so all in all unless it is at the point where it is ear shattering, they might be in the right. Worse case scenario, you may be able to file a peace order or file a mediation claim with them (You can find the info on the Maryland Courts website. www.mdcourts.gov). If the leasing office does not want anything to do with it, force their hand. Get a copy of the bylaws and read what it states about music levels and speak with a district or general manager/reprsenative.
good luck!

You lease will probably be up before you do all of that.

I own some rentals and have specifics in the lease about noise. Check your lease and see if it has any "quite hours" or language about noise affecting neighbors. If you have anything in the lease contact management and file a complaint. Let them be the ones to deal with the other tenant. If they can't resolve the issue you may be able to get out of the lease and move without any penalties. If it is an apartment building and you like the location, just not the neighbors you may be able to just change apartments.

Good luck.

Buy a good fan and turn it on high. White noise is what it does. It will not solve the problem, but it will get rid of a lot of small noises.

if they're playing music loud at night, chances are, they are not early risers. when you wake up, blast your music and leave it on after you're out the door for work. or put a timer on it for 4-5 hours before shutting off.

i used to have this problem with college students. so at 5am, they get to hear my music for 5 hours. after about a week, we both found a mutual understanding.

What a great idea...giving them a taste of their own medicine!

I'm very sorry you have to deal with that. I went through the same situation for an entire year in a townhouse I used to rent so I can sympathize. I tried everything- speaking to them kindly, speaking with the landlord, even contacting an attorney to review my lease to see if I could get out of it early with minimal or no penalties. Unfortunately none of that worked. I did exactly what chesapeake 83 recommended and bought a bag of earplugs to use for sleeping. If I were you I would take a good look at the lease and maybe even have an attorney look at it, just in case there is something in it that can help you. Hope the problem gets resolved.
