I would just like to say that alot of the surrounding communities around olde towne like saybrooke, rosemont, washington grove, hidden creek, the brooks and chestnut historic districts, and all of the post-WWII single family homes east of city hall, I would personally consider to be exceptionally wonderful, safe, upper-middle class places to raise a family. There is a chance for crime anywhere in the county (unless you live behind the gated gold-course developments in potomac).

But there are many much better high schools in MoCo that are better than Gaithersburg. When I was going to go to high school, I would have gone to Gaithersburg if my parents hadn't had the foresight and wherewithall to get into a private school instead. And in the mid-80s, when I would have attended, there were gang problems then.
I went to G'burg HS in the mid 80's (grad in 87) and there weren't any gangs there.
I think I saw maybe 2 fights my entire time there.
I have no idea what it's like now, but it was fine back then.
