Default relocating to MD (Talbot County)

Hello all! My husband and I are getting ready to relocate from Indiana to Maryland. I have a good job all lined up in St Michaels, and we are looking for a place to live in the vicinity, preferably in Talbot County. We are looking really hard at Easton, but are willing to consider other cities in the area...

Maybe it's because we have gotten spoiled with cheaper Midwest housing, but rent seems a lot more expensive out there! I've been calling apartments and the least expensive I can find is $970/month (I should add here that we have a cat and a big--85 lb Lab mix--dog, both of whom are part of the family and will be coming with us, so the prices I've gotten have been for apartments with large pets allowed). I've looked at houses too, but they are even more expensive. I'm wondering if we are not finding houses online that are more geared toward summer renters coming to the Eastern Shore? We were prepared for having to pay more in rent, but not quite as much more as we are finding!

Does anyone have any recommendations for sites to look at or places to go in Talbot County that might be less pricy? Or are we just going to have to bite the bullet and tighten our belts for a while? (My husband will be looking for a job when we get out there as well...so any recommendation on employment for him would also be appreciated! His background is in university housing administration and retail management.) We will be coming back up to the area to house hunt next week. Thanks in advance for any advice!
