Default Fort Washington Commute times

Hi I am considering a move to Ft. Washington and I'm unfamiliar with the whole DC area. How close is Ft. Washington to a metro stop? I would need the green line and my husband would need the red. Do you pay to park? Is there a waiting list to get a reserved space? How much does parking a subway pass cost for a year? What are average commute times into DC?

Thank you!

I would not recommend Ft Washington. Bowie would be better.

Try poking around WMATA's website for times and costs. Figure a 20 minute drive in no traffic to the Branch Ave Station (closest to Ft Washington). Perhaps someone else can help you out with typical commute times in rush hour.

Expect parking to be full by 8am, though reportedly prior to 7am there is ample parking. Parking is currently $4.25 a day, and if you would like a better shot of getting a spot later in the day you can pay an extra $55 a month to get a reserved space permit. This is on top of the daily rate and does not guarantee a space. They have so many spaces set aside, and issue so many permits. More permits issued than spaces as not everyone will use it every day, spaces are reserved to the group of permit holders, not individuals. Only permit holders can park in the spaces until 10am, after that they open the remaining spaces to anyone. There is currently a waiting list for reserved space permits at Branch Ave.

If you want to know your time on rail and costs, you can plug in the Branch Ave station and the destination station, pick an arrival time you think you'd be using and pick a normal weekday into WMATA's home page and it will show you transfers, time, and cost.

There are also two "park and ride" close, one in Accokeek and one in Fort Washington by the shopping complex on Indian Head. As said in a previous post, all of these spost fill up fast, and once gone, their gone. Indian Head Hgwy can be a nightmare in the morining if not timed correctly, so driving may not be an easy option. However if you can make it to Anacostia metro station, naylor rd, or southern ave, they usually have pretty good parking at later times.

You could also go to the Southern Avenue Metro Station. It's located in Temple Hills and is about 15 to 20 ride from Fort Washington.
Metro - Rail - Southern Avenue

Personally I am at the very beginning of Ft. Washington closest to the Nat'l Harbor end and I find Southern Ave. to be the closest metro station and I get there in about 10 minutes.

"Cool Rob" is wrong to say that the metro-BUS park-and-ride lots fill up. The large parking lot across from National Harbor, the smaller one on Swan Creek Road, and the smaller one next to the Accokeek library, none of them ever fill to capacity. I parked variously in all of them every day, for many years.

Well, I am not going to argue your experience, but through my OWN personal experience the lots on Swan Creek, Livingston, and Nat harbor do seem to be pretty full, if you get their too late on the wrong day. So there you have it
